Mike is a professional horseman who has spent his entire life riding, training, and shoeing horses. He has successfully shown Ranch Horses, Hunters, Dressage (English & Western), Ranch Roping, as well as helping others improve their horsemanship skills via lesions and clinics. In the mid-1990’s Mike was introduced to Ray Hunt, and he’s never looked back. The foundation of his style of quality hors
emanship focuses on the importance of forming a partnership between the horse and rider that is based on mutual respect and dignity. “Feel” is simply communication through body language that is cued in timing and balance with the horse’s next movement. It can require “as little as you need to, but be prepared to do as much as you have to” or ideally as little as thought or as much as all of the strength you have. This approach also rejects punishment and control and instead emphasizes guidance and positive reinforcement when riding or training. Ultimately, it implies “the horse knows when you know,” a connection which can revolutionize the effectiveness of the relationship between a horse and his rider and/or trainer. “If you can get to his mind, you’ll get to his feet” - the proof is in the performance. Mike is a talented horse trainer and a gifted, patient, human instructor. Combining common sense and knowledge gained from years of experience with innate sensitivity and an open mind allows him to clearly assess and resolve horse and rider issues. Whether 4-legged or 2-legged, Mike’s students can trust in his ability to help them when they are in a bind. He firmly believes that “perfect practice makes perfect,” and being able to distinguish perfect from imperfect practice is key to maintaining productive habits - and stay safe. For many years, Mike has been helping horses willingly establish a solid foundation of training and riding through feel, thus optimizing their individual, natural abilities. At the same time, he has also been helping riders learn and practice these techniques and improve their own skills and confidence, aiming toward a happier and better quality life for themselves and their horses!
