Tomorrow is Kids’ Day at the Storrs Farmers Market. In addition to veggies, including tomatoes and peppers!, I’ll have milkweed seedlings and other native pollinator plants. A fun project for anyone, planting natives with the goal of attracting butterflies, bees, and other insects is an especially engaging project for children.

The only “pest” I’m happy to see back at the farm every year. This is the caterpillar of the black swallowtail butterfly. They feed on parsley, carrots, rue, and pictured here, fennel. When they are on plants which are about to be harvested, I move them to the parsley patch, where they can keep munching.

The peas are up, the carrots are up, now it's time for you to sign up! There are still CSA shares available, find all the info and forms at https://cobblestonefarmcsa.com/ The farm is on Bassetts Bridge Rd in Mansfield Center, the CSA season is 20 weeks long starting in early June, and there is flexibility around summer vacations. It seems crazy that I’m irrigating this early, but the upside of June in April is that the carrots are germinating. I’ve never planted carrots this early; I do love their elegant little cotyledons.
