Lee's Bees has closed because we have moved. However, for the time being I am keeping the page up so that others can learn a little bit about honeybees from the photos and descriptions. I cannot keep bees anymore because we have moved to a more residential neighborhood in Rhode Island.

You have to look closely but the little dots you see are several thousand bees that decided they need a new place to live. This is called a swarm. Soon, they will temporarily land on a shrub or something similar and I will work to gather them. This process is described in the post below.

Gathering a swarm of honey bees. When the hive gets too crowded about half of the bees seek a new place to live. First though, they land on a tree, bush or other object and send out a few bees to find a new home. While they are on the shrub I place a small bee box called a nuc, shake the shrub and many of the bees drop in the box. As long as the new queen dropped in the box the rest of the bees will march into the box and that is what you see here. I close up the box and carry it to a new awaiting hive and now they have a new home.
