Flower stand friends: it’s been a weird summer for flowers. Despite our very best efforts to loving grow hundreds of flowers from seed over the winter and plant their seedlings this spring, we have had very little actual flowers to show for it. Of the 30 dahlia tubers we planted, we’re getting one bloom at a time from maybe 5 of them so far. And every one of their plants is small, pretty sad looking, pale green, and just not good all around. Our veggies and herbs are doing great, but the flowers are limping along. Which is why we haven’t had much to give away so far.

As I’ve said before: we’re not actually a flower farm and we’re very much learning as we go. But this spring we felt great. We learned from lessons last year, made some tweaks, added tons more flowers to the mix, and did everything right. But Mother Nature just had other plans for our summer. My best guess is those high temps in June and July really did us in. When it does rain, it rains in inches at a time. All of this is to just say we’re sorry there’s not more flowers to share this summer. We really are trying! And I know no one has asked, or shown any disappointment. But the fact that we’ve had so few flowers despite the fact that we planted more than ever before has been weighing on me and frankly making me sad because I really love making bouquets and sharing them at the stand. So I figured it was worth mentioning. Here’s hoping things turn around a bit….historically, September and October have both been pretty fruitful months so 🙏🏻🤞🏻💗

Here’s a pic of one of our sad dahlias lol - for perspective, usually by mid August these would be waist high and filled with dark green leaves and tons of buds.

Huge batch this morning thanks to friends with sunflowers to spare! This has been a weird summer for flowers. Most of mine are confused by all the high temps, no rain, floods, etc. but I’m hopeful the dahlias will pop soon!

Some friendly reminders about how this whole free flower stand works! Also, please please please only take one bouquet. Even if you’re planning to give them to multiple people and spread more joy, I trust you, but the person pulling up behind you who’s been waiting all summer for one may feel differently!
