The first permanent piggy paddock was completed today!
This will be one of 6 paddocks that our pigs will be rotated through. They will spend 2 weeks in each paddock before rotating to the next. The paddock will be seeded after the pigs are moved and have nearly 3 months to recover before the pigs return. This rotational system allows the pigs to restore soil fertility, while minimizing parasite loads, flies, and odor.
The pigs have spent the last several months in a tractor setup that was moved to fresh ground daily. They are so happy to have more space, shady trees, and new places to explore!
Our pig herd is the smallest that it has ever been since we started the farm. We had over 60 pigs at our peak, now we are down to 7! Establishing permanent pastures will allow us to restart our breeding program this fall. Pigs mature quickly and we anticipate to be back to our normal numbers by next year. In the meantime, we will be purchasing and raising piglets from trusted breeders to continue to meet product demand.
