Day 9 of treating the chocolate litter for bloat…

At this point I think it’s safe to say: ALL 6 BEAT THE BLOAT!🙌🙏🏻
Fighting bloat with this litter of 7 for 9 days straight and only lost one on day 8.

I know for sure, straw will always be one of the first things I grab when signs of bloat presents. Thank you Diana for that suggestion!❤️

I’m still going to give electrolytes and probios for a few more days to give them a little bit extra stuff. Everyone is now pooping regularly and eating and HUNGRY! No more teeth grinding either.

Now they went 9 days without food other than straw and hay. So their weights took a major hit. The one I thought wasn’t going to make it because it’s skin and bones is literally 15oz. The heaviest in this litter is 1lb 6oz. That is a pound under what they should be at 6 weeks old. They were larger than their 2 siblings that with my REW doe before this bloat. Those two weight 2.5lbs and almost 3. Which means genetically this litter should hit weights. I’m going to be keeping an eye on these guys weights and go from there. I’m hoping in the next 6 weeks that they stay here before deciding what happens to who, they will be able to catch up where they are suppose to be🤞🏻

Woke up this morning to a chocolate who still had a hard stomach last night, didn’t make it.

All of these 6 have soft stomachs now. There is one that I suspect to not make it, it’s really skinny and was the only one grinding teeth this morning. As of right now it’s fighting and eating and drinking normally. Only time will tell.

But they have an appetite back! I didn’t give much pellets because I don’t want them over doing it, but they are starting to eat them. Hoping this bloat is behind us for this litter🤞🏻🤞🏻

These two does got separated from the rest of their litter 4 days after they were born, and fostered in with the 4 blacks from my REW doe. With this bloat going on with the rest of the chocolates, these two have been perfectly healthy through it all.

Practiced posing them today, let’s just say I can’t wait to see what the ones with bloat looks like later when they fully recover from this and can start gaining weight.🥰

I think it’s safe to say all babies in the chocolate litter that had bloat are on the road to recovery. They are eating a lot more hay than straw now, very rarely do I hear teeth grinding. Yesterday morning they were all running around. While some still have slightly hard bellies telling me they still don’t feel 100% they are still recovering. They still haven’t seemed too interested in pellets that their mom gets, but they are getting more hungry and eating a lot more hay. So we are getting there.

Day 5 of treating this entire litter for bloat.
Their stomachs are finally not so full feeling. I got some electrolytes paste in a syringe and gave them last night and tonight, their skin feels and looks more hydrated. They are still only on straw, hay and some mint diet but more active and wanting to eat more. I haven’t added pellets back in for the babies, mom gets hers, I want to wait until I see slightly less swollen bellies and more bowel movements. I’m starting to see some, but not a bunch. Which tells me not all babies are progressing as fast as some others. 🤞🏻 hoping they continue to make a recovery

This is apparently the year to deal with bloat.

Last Sunday I came down in the morning to take care of the rabbits. I found one of the lilacs had passed over night with no signs of illness or anything. Later Sunday evening I noticed the entire 5 week old chocolate/ lilac litter had signs of bloat. No other rabbit in my barn. Even the chocolate and lilac that my rew doe (Blossom) is raising is fine. So I chalked it up to maybe this chocolate doe(Daphne) stopped producing milk and weaned them.

At 5 pm on Sunday I stated the entire litter was going to die that night. That’s how bad it was. I gave them all probios to hopefully help them and removed their food other than hay. A friend of mine told me to try straw. Straw? I had never heard of that. So I went down to TSC and grabbed a bale of straw. Willing to try anything to save this litter.

At 7pm- 2 hours after they got the straw and started nibbling. I saw the worst of them, the lilac, nibbling hay. I than decided to put a couple stems of fresh mint in there to see if that helps settle their stomachs even more. They also began nibbling that.

9pm came and mom was nursing them. All but one chocolate was flipped upside down nursing from mom. The chocolate was huddled behind mom and was in rough shape.

I came out the next morning and found, I DIDNT LOSE A SINGLE BABY! I was blown away. So I’ve been giving fresh straw 2 times daily, the option of hay, some fresh mint 2 times a day and making sure they constantly have water. As well as giving them probios.

This video is them 2 days after trying the straw. The bloat smell is gone. The lilac isn’t having diarrhea anymore. That stopped sometime the first night after they got straw. They aren’t out of the woods yet, but they are making a recovery.

I will be posting more shortly, we are just going through another stretch of high heat for the next little bit, so it’s going to be a few days until I can get them posted. There is a couple 12 week old litters I have to go through.
