Today’s “History Hot Spot” takes us up to the Sleeping Bear Dunes region of the Lake Michigan coast! Have you had a chance to spend time in this area?

The Port Oneida Farms Heritage Center—located in the Charles and Hattie Olsen Farmhouse—is a visitor’s gateway into the Port Oneida Rural Historic District in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The historic district includes over a dozen agricultural sites, which are historically significant because they convey the land-use practices, architecture, and evolution of agricultural technology common to farms of the upper Great Lakes region. In the Heritage Center, visitors can view displays focusing on the Native Americans and early pioneers who settled in the area. They can also explore the farmstead, take in the exhibits, go on a history hunt, play an old-fashioned game, and enjoy a picnic on the grounds.
