Berries for jams and jelly. Red currant jelly, black currant/gooseberry jam. I like to make with Pamona Pectin, so I can use just a fraction of the sugar most recipes call for.

Gooseberries! In the same family as currants, they were once federally banned because they can carry a fungal disease that kills white pine trees. Most states now allow the production of gooseberries, but few people are familiar with them. About the size of grapes, and either green or red in color, they have the texture of grapes, and are sweet/tart, more tart if the green variety, sweeter if red. What to do with them? You can eat them fresh, or they make great pies and jam, sauces for meats, a clafoutis to die for, and (our favorite recipe)--a gooseberry margarita! We will have gooseberries, and currants too, at our next farmers market on July 9 in Empire. And if jam or jelly seems like too much trouble, check out our selection, made with Pamona pectin, allowing a low sugar content, and an amazing fruit forward flavor.

We've been interested in garlic for many years, but it's been a long time coming learning how to grow it well. It's harder than we thought, choosing the best varieties for our area, learning how best to plant in fall to overwinter, amending the soil, fertilizing at the right time, picking the scapes (flower heads) and then harvesting at the right time.

One of the things that most intrigues us is the unique flavor profiles. There are over 700 varieties of garlic grown around the world and each one looks and tastes different. We have offered 12 or more varieties at markets for several years now, and this year, we are selling our Gourmet Garlic sampler bags in three flavor groups (mild, spicy, and all purpose) to Oryana.

Find us-- and our gourmet garlic-- at the farmers market in Empire on Saturday, 9am to 1pm. It's a wonderful market, with a great mix of vendors and products!

Corn season is right around the corner! Sooner than we'd expected, since we took a chance and put it in early. Now it's in tassel and ears are forming; we're hoping for it to be ready later this month. We grow corn successively to extend the season through September. This first crop is an heirloom bicolor, the second, third and fourth white, and fifth is bicolor again.

While we're all waiting for corn season, come visit us at Empire farmers market on Saturday. We have plenty of early summer goodies, including snap and shelling peas, baby beets and carrots, cauliflower, Fava beans, and much much more!

It's officially summer, and our crops are growing by leaps and bounds! New this week at Empire market (Saturdays 9-1) are Japanese Hakurei turnips. Crisp, and with a sweet, mild flavor, they can be eaten raw, sautéed and glazed with butter and sugar, added to a root roast on the barbie, or stir fried with other veggies.

Next up-- snap peas and Fava beans, at market July 3!
