A couple days ago Chamomile appeared to have an umbilical hernia. No fever, cheerful bouncy baby goat self. Consuming all the milk!

I called our vet, he said, ā€œif she’s a keeper we will need to surgerically repair it.ā€ The day of surgery it looked different… and well, turns out, it was an infection via the umbilical cord.

Our vet, drew me a diagram to explain how these things happen, all the internals, and how in vitro, how little goats p*e, via their ā€œurachusā€ (like an overflow valve) to mom, who p*es it out for them. Her umbilical cord didnt fully heal up closed, so she was still ā€œp*eingā€ through it, but also normally.

Essentially there are three tube structures that all come to a union at the belly button, one the urachus, arteries, and umbilical and this all connects through the body of the animal, potentially affecting the liver if the infection isn’t dealt with.

Chamomile is in surgery this morning to hopefully remove all the infected tissue and get her on the mend.

She is my ā€œgolden goatā€ and i am hoping for the best outcome! I’m sure she will be happy to come back home soon.

It’s so fitting that June is dairy month and today World Milk Day. I have a bit to share dairy wise!

While this ā€œdairy monthā€ was originally meant to help promote dairy during times of surplus in the US, the World Milk Day works to bring awareness to how much milk brings nutrition to the world and what an economic player it is.

Milk feeds so many, not just the dairymen and their communities, but also orphaned babies both human and animal, and other livestock animals as well enjoy its sustenance. Allow me not to forget what it can do for plants, too! Also… you’re welcome cheese fans!

We are still in our micro dairy build. We took a little hiatus this last month as we got caught up doing ranch maintenance. All of this wonderful rain created all sorts of to-dos, and the vegetation has been abundant to say the least!

We are dedicated to the dairy life, and look forward to sharing our raw goats milk bounty with all of you, but of course, need to do so legally. Permit application has been submitted to the DSHS, and now we really just need to get head down on the last of the dairy build. Interior walls, outlets, sinks, and lights. Drains are installed already, doors, etc. My tentative goal is by the end of August. Will you cross you fingers and say some good prayers and juju?

I thought I was going to have 6 does in milk for this season, but it turns out I have two more sneaky gals that are actually pregnant and, seemingly due quite soon. I should really blame ā€œBuddy On Boardā€ our junior buck for breaking into their paddock this winter, BUT, it takes two to tango, so we will have EIGHT does in milk for 2026. I just assume a gallon of milk per doe per day… a safe bet, so I figure 56 gallons a week. 🤭🄰 But Annie gave me a gallon of milk THIS MORNING, so we shall see how this all pans out.

If you’re interested in raw milk, or already drink it… will you tell me what you love about it, or what makes you interested? For me, it’s one of the most magical substances I can think of and I’m completely intoxicated by its ability to heal and transform into so many other nutritional products, like cheese!

Happy World Milk Day! šŸ„›

World Milk Day is more than just a celebration – it’s a movement that highlights milk as a vital, accessible food source that nourishes billions.

Milk provides essential nutrients that support bone health, growth, and immune function, making it crucial for both children and adults.

Observed annually on June 1, World Milk Day unites countries, organizations, and communities to recognize and amplify the dairy sector’s impact on sustainable agriculture, economic development, and global health.

Thankful Eddie is skilled in Goat-jujitsu holds. šŸ˜… FRC-RANCH BRIGHT APOLLO is now tattooed and ready for the road trip to his new home herd.

Livestock animals are required to have permanent identification prior to transportation, among other reasons, like being able to track the spread of disease. Specifically, with the American Dairy Goat Association, the right ear requires the herd ID, for us, ā€œFRCR,ā€ and for the left ear, an alpha-numeric combination that signifies the birth year and birth order. This year, 2026, is the letter V.

The tattoo is placed with the metal pliers you see in the photo, interchangeable tiles with metal pins create the letters & numbers when pressed into the ears. First you apply a green ink (green shows the best long term in these deep pigmented ears), press the ID into the ear, and continue to rub the ink into the fresh holes for 30-60 seconds. Farmer stick and poke.

Last year I didn’t have an extra R tile that I needed for our herd ID so my tattoo artist friend agreed to come out and hand letter extra dots to turn a P tile into an R. 🤭

With the cleanest tattoo event in history, we got Apollo loaded up into the truck with zero green ink on the humans. That’s a success!

Sayonara! šŸ‘‹šŸ’„ Eddie with the ā€œsnake charmerā€ 410 said, ā€œNot today!ā€

Right near our goat paddocks and not far from the dog kennels. We were headed out to sort some cows when Eddie spotted him. I don’t know how he sees these things so well and so quickly, but I’m glad he does.

We’re not anti-snakes, but we’re anti-rattlers. Definitely looks better without a head.

K1 got one the other day with her car. šŸ’Ŗ

Keep your wits about’cha… and don’t be walking around at night without a flashlight.

Well here’s a couple less liquidy photos of the two new kids. šŸ˜…šŸ¤

I named the girl ā€œSovayā€ - after the Andrew Bird song. I planned it before she was born. Eddie and I love that song, and the story of Sovay is pretty badass. It’s an old English folk song about a young woman named Sovay who dresses and arms herself as a highwayman in order to test her lover.

In disguise, she robs her love of nearly all his possessions, but even under threat of death he refuses to give up the gold ring given by Sovay, thus proving his devotion to her.

Sovay eventually confesses to her lover and returns his various possessions, but admitting that if he had indeed given up the ring, she would have killed him. šŸ‘€

šŸ‘€GOAT DELIVERY VIDEO (no sound) Dottie delivered twins yesterday at 153 days gestation. šŸ’› FRC-RANCH CONNECT THE DOTS x THE FRC-RANCH BUDDY ON BOARD.

I had been waiting to leave to go to town because I could tell active labor was near, but of course Dot waited until after I decided to head out. We had a gathering planned for the evening and I still needed to run some errands before so at 1:30 I left for town.

I checked our kidding area camera before I went into the grocery store, and of course, there she was doing the labor dance. I called Eddie and told him about Dot, and he & K1 stopped what they were doing for gathering setup to observe & assist. I’m glad they were there.

Eddie FaceTimed me and we quickly realized the second kid was arriving rear feet first. It was an exercise for me to give direction without creating anxiety. Neither have delivered a kid before, and we’ve never had one come out backwards. K1 gave a light pull down at the end to deliver. Eddie filming.

If they weren’t there he would have been delivered just fine and we’d never know the difference. There wasn’t much for assistance, just being present if the sac broke before he was out, gives me solace, but it could have easily gone awry.

Mom and babies are doing GREAT! They’re beautiful rusty brown kids with solid ears. Dottie’s udder is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen, and I could have easily taken a gallon from her during this mornings milking.

A half gallon of her colostrum is in our freezer, and everyone is napping together in fresh hay.

Horray! One more doe to kid (due ins three days) and we will be done for this 2026 kidding season!

How are we so blessed to be amongst such amazingly thoughtful, kind, & creative people?

Our friend, Bob Morely, has been lovingly taking care of our 1800s ranch house this Spring. Carefully and lovingly painting & restoring the exterior wood siding repairing windows, and breathing life back into the tired grains.

Bob is a wizard with a paintbrush, a folk artist, musician, world traveler, passionate cook, seed sower, story teller, and someone you can easily spend hours with enjoying his warmth and cheerful giggles.

With the donation of a special skateboard deck, and the desire to give us something extra special, Bob painted a portrait of our one and only, TLC-FARMS AG HOUSTON, in our hill country landscape. This goat has multiple pieces of art created around him, and I don’t know if it’s my obsession with my herd, or if he’s just so damn studly you can’t help to want to capture his looks! Probably both.

This beauty is hanging up in the raw milk dairy as soon as it’s finished!

Please enjoy this awesome artwork and keep your eyes p*eled around these parts, and honestly, all around the world, for Bob Morely art.
