Hey folks!
You may have noticed our absence from the Panama City Farmers’ Market in recent weeks - Kelly and I wanted to post and give you an update on the farm and our plans.
Farming is one of the few endeavors where you can do things right and still face challenging times! In October 2018, Hurricane Michael devastated our landscape. This storm was incredibly costly on our farm - we still have areas of the farm that need to be cleaned up; areas that are essentially unusable due to storm damage; areas that were productive to the farm, but now lie in wait to be restored.
In March 2020, COVID brought its on share of challenges for the entire world…demand for our products became exponential, but butcher dates and supplies were nearly impossible to come by. The economic decline and fall-out that followed led to soaring feed, fertilizer and fuel prices. As a result, we necessarily scaled back on our pig and chicken production. The margins had either vanished or become so small it was no longer feasible to sell pork and chicken. We were losing money on both enterprises.
We expanded our cattle numbers and this past winter hay prices were nearly double what they were in previous years.
All the while, we experienced large increases in our insurance premiums and greater regulation on our poultry processing facility. We decided to close the Farm Store in March 2024 due to increased production and operating cost.
Up to this point, this sounds like a bad 1970’s country song…but we’re still farming! Our cattle herd and hay fields will be more productive than ever over the next few months!
Ryan decided to take a job in town. He is working as a bookkeeper at an accounting firm and enjoys the quiet, air-conditioned office!
Our three sons have always been a large part of our farming operation and we’re excited to see their dreams and goals come to fruition.
Nathan graduated from Southeast Lineman Training Center in April 2024 and is working with an electrical line company - He helps Ryan on the farm on weekends.
Dylan graduated from Navy Bootcamp in January 2024 and has been to training schools in California and Texas. He is scheduled to ship out in June 2024 - headed to Bahrain!
Garrett and Amber are settled into their home and have the most wonderful raised-bed garden! Garrett also helps on the Farm on weekends.
For those of you that have been loyal customers and fans of our small farm; we thank you from the bottom of our heart! Y’all gave us hope and encouragement during some tough days. We will forever be appreciative of you.
As we look forward, we’re not sure what the future holds. We plan to always produce cattle and hay here on the farm. We intend to post updates about the farm here on social media. We look forward to the next chapter in our adventure!
