Newsletter #175: June 13-19

Hello, everyone! Hope you had the best week! We sure did! There is a lot to talk about this week, so I’ll get right to it!

MICHIGAN TART CHERRIES!!!! We are now taking orders until Friday, July 10th for the Montmorency cherries! Yay!! These cherries do not come in slush packs anymore. You can order IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) Montmorency Cherries in 5 lb. bags or 40 lb. bags. We do not have a price on these yet; we should know in the next two weeks. Delivery date for these cherries will be in September! The cold Spring was harsh in Michigan this year, and late frosts did a number on the first harvest of cherries in June. Call in at 740-373-2484, email us at [email protected], or send us a message on Facebook to order!

Montmorency Cherries are known for being America’s most popular tart cherry. They have a bright red color, firm yellow flesh, and a rich, tart, and tangy flavor. They are perfect for pies, jams, and preserves! They are also delicious dried or for juice or a dessert sauce. Plus, tart cherries are so good for us! They help with muscle soreness, sleep, and inflammation. Better get our names down on the list!

READER’S CHOICE AWARDS: The Marietta Times Reader’s Choice Awards final round of voting is now through Thursday, June 18th! Winning one of these awards is great for a small business and really does mean a lot! I’m sure you have seen the banners around town and beyond of businesses who have won in the past. Please make sure to go through and vote for all of your favorite small businesses including Huck’s (you can see our categories on our last Facebook post) and two of our small business partners: Dad’s Primitives (they have been nominated for several categories) and Duck Creek Candle Co. (Candles/Wax Melts). They have both won before and would love to add another year to their streak!!

FUNDRAISER: On Wednesday, June 24th, 10% of lunch sales at both locations (114 Putnam Street and 412 Muskingum Drive) between 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. will go to Huntington Bank’s Pelotonia Fundraiser and to help them put an American flag up at their 2nd street location. One thing I love about Marietta is businesses do really like to help the community and each other, so we are happy to partner with them! Please consider stopping in for lunch that day at either location!

The ladies at the market bought the big boss (Jim) a funny tshirt. Check out the picture below!

Here is what is happening at the Downtown Huck’s!

The Downtown Huck’s will be closed on Friday, June 19th in honor of Juneteenth.

On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, but it was not followed by all of America immediately. In fact, there was still slavery in some Southern states even two years later. Finally, on June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to free the last remaining enslaved people in America. Although it has been celebrated for over a century, it became a federal holiday 5 years ago.

Here is what is happening outside at Huck’s!

Newsletter #174: June 8-15 (more pics tomorrow!)

Hello, everyone! I hope you have enjoyed a beautiful first week of June! June is probably my very favorite month of the year! The flowers are looking so pretty, and it’s nice and warm but not too hot yet!

This summer is an exciting one with America’s 250th birthday! To kick things off, next Friday, June 14th is Flag Day. On July 14th, 1777, Congress decided that the U.S. flag should have 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue background representing the 13 original colonies. In 1885, a Wisconsin school teacher proposed a Flag Birthday. Finally, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing Flag Day in 1916. Flag Day is a chance to celebrate the freedom and unity that our flag represents.

I need to say a Happy 24th Anniversary to Jim! We got married on Saturday, June 15th, 2002 on a beautiful, sunny day. It was one of the happiest days of my life, although I’m sure most of you would agree about your wedding day….I don’t actually remember a lot about the actual day. I think it was because I was floating on cloud nine! Well, ol’ Jimmy, I’m still on cloud nine all these years later!

Call in at 740-373-2484, email us at [email protected], or send us a message on Facebook to order!

Here is what is happening outside at Huck’s!

PLANT SALE!! 40% off! Wahoo!

This is a great time to fill in areas that you don’t have flowers for yet! We still have some ferns, hanging baskets, planters of different sizes, and bedding plants. We also have some roses and perennials.

There are still plenty of herbs and veggies to get planted as well! What’s your favorite tomato?

How are your plants looking? Don’t forget to dead head anything that has died off! That way the plant can spend its energy on growing new buds! Also, a weekly shot of fertilizer keeps them healthy, lush, and the color bright!

Here is what is happening inside the market!
RIPLEY TOMATOES!!! Yes, that deserves all capitals! These tomatoes are absolutely delicious! We have waited for about 9 months for a homegrown tomato, and aren’t you glad the time is finally here! Stop in!

A couple of nights ago, as soon as the Ripley tomatoes arrived, we had BLTs for supper! We used Walnut Creek bacon and Walnut Creek mayo to top it off. It was a delicious sandwich, and the summertime supper!

Jim was able to get some corn from down South! I haven’t had the chance to try it, but people say it is good!

We have a delicious new cookie in our bakery! S’mores! If you like a deep chocolate cookie with chocolate chunks and marshmallow, this cookie is for you! Our youngest, Sydney, did a taste test and here is her review: “It’s really good, and I think it’s my new favorite cookie!” Well, you can’t get any better than that!

Have you bought any of our bags of coffee? This Walnut Creek brand of coffee has been getting some great reviews from our customers. I chatted with one customer about the French Vanilla flavored coffee. First, she loved how it is ground right at the store, so it’s extra fresh. She also said it had a smooth finish and just a subtle hint of the vanilla flavor which she liked. She loves coffee and usually prefers it black, so she wasn't sure she would like it as well as she did!

Newsletter #172: May 9-15

The weekend to celebrate all the moms out there has arrived!! Better not forget her! I recently read a touching article about how a mother is one of the only people in your life that never wants anything in return. (Dads can be lumped into this as well, but since it’s Mother’s Day, we are focusing on mothers. Lol!) She loves you unconditionally, roots for you every time in life, and is always looking out for your best interest. Isn’t that a beautiful thought!? Grab your mom a pretty flower or two and then head on inside for something to round out your gift. Here are some ideas for every type of mom.

Does your mom like something handmade? Look at the locally made hand-sewn items from The Crooked Needle or earrings from The Potter’s Hands. They both have some adorable things at great prices!

Does your mom like something homey and cozy that smells good? How about getting her a locally hand-poured soy candle, room spray, or car freshener? Duck Creek Candles has scents that range from florals to desserts and outdoors to homespun. There really is a scent for everyone!

Does your mom like a cute country gift? Then, check out Dad’s Primitives items. He always chooses the most adorable items! They are restocking this weekend, so be on the lookout!

Does your mama like to make lists (I love a list!), write recipes and cards, and love art? Forever Caroline has a beautiful line of Appalachian artists. And don’t forget Mom’s card! There are single cards that are unique and so so pretty!

Does your mom like chocolate? Pick her up a pound of Dutch Delights. We will have them bagged up with a pretty ribbon ready to go on Saturday and Sunday.

Does your mom have a sweet tooth? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Sweets are our middle name! We have buckeyes, whoopie pies, fruit pies, fry pies, cookies, etc.

Is your mom health conscious? How about getting her some local honey, pink Himalayan sea salt, or Yoder’s Health tonic.

Maybe your mom loves to garden. We have lots of flats, so that mom can do her own planting.

If you aren’t sure, get mom a gift certificate and let her shop herself. And don’t forget to grab her a sandwich! One thing I know for sure….no mom wants to be cooking on Mother’s Day!
