💚💚Green flags in a riding instructor💚💚
Just because someone can ride, doesn’t mean they can teach.
I see a lot of people trying to find somewhere to start, especially parents who are new to the horse world, and it can be hard to tell what’s actually good vs what just looks good online or for a lesson or two.
Here’s some green flags of what I’d look for in an instructor:
• Your kid is learning more than just riding.
They should be catching, grooming, tacking up, helping, learning responsibility—not just hopping on and off.
• The instructor lets them figure some things out.
Not throwing them to the wolves—but not fixing everything instantly either. That’s how confidence actually gets built.
• Safety is just how things are done.
Helmets, horse matches, rules… not chaotic, not rushed, not “we’ll deal with it if something happens.”
• They explain things.
Not just “do this, do that.” Kids should understand what they’re doing and why it matters.
• Corrections aren’t mean.
This sport is humbling enough. You can be firm without making kids feel small.
• They care about the basics more than winning.
Quick ribbons are easy. A solid foundation takes time.
• The horses look good.
This one tells you everything. Healthy, calm, taken care of horses = a program that actually cares.
• Kids stick around.
That says a lot.
• And the trainer is still learning too.
Nobody knows it all in this industry—and the good ones will be the first to say that.
At the end of the day, a good program isn’t just making riders…
it’s building confident, capable kids who learn how to work, respect animals, and handle hard things.
