"Sit a spell" is a Southern American idiomatic phrase inviting someone to sit down, relax, and socialize for an extended period. Rooted in Southern hospitality, it emphasizes slowing down to chat or rest, often with phrases like "come on in and sit a spell".
But if Sit A Spell was a human form, it would represent my dear friend, Sandy Kloehn. I had met Sandy almost 23 years ago, at a salon I was renting from, she was our receptionist. Sandy had the energy of a saint. This calming effect that would draw you in. She was the person you could go to and spill out all of your worries, troubles, or concerns. With Sandy, there was never any judgement and she is one of the best listeners. She had a deep understanding and life knowledge. She had a way of guiding you to further look at "the other side" of any conflict resulting in forgiveness or understanding. No childhood trauma, bad experiences, life lessons, is worth carrying a chip on your shoulder.
Our friendship continued to grow and Sandy was with me through many highlights of my life. She encouraged me to open Grassroots a salon, was my biggest cheerleader and worked along side me. Our friendship deepened. Throughout the years, Sandy and I decided to take a business class together to explore the option of opening a Spa. Even though this didn't come to permission, the name "Sit A Spell" evolved. Sandy had chosen it and being that I haven't ever heard of the expression before, I quickly fell in love with it!
Our friendship journey continued. Sandy was by my side. Marrying Geoff, 3 children, navigating me through when the Dr. thought I was going to loose Josephine during pregnancy, my miracle baby, childhood trauma, and loosing my mom to cancer. (More on those stories later, there pretty amazing not to share). Sandy has been my rock, my comforter, supporter, spiritual guider, my best friend.
Later, as Geoff and I would randomly look at country properties, I would say that one day we are going to find our "Sit A Spell". This phrase has stuck with me and I knew that if I found the perfect piece of land it would be an honor to my dear friend, to call it "Sit a Spell".
So here we are.....every time I drive up the picturesque driveway along the lake to this beautiful piece of land, Sit a Spell Farms, I get teary-eyed from the joy that I am still in disbelief that this dream has come true. I feel a sense of peace, release, tranquility when my feet touch the ground. I hope this land morphs into a place that family, dear friends, future grandkids will want to come and visit. I hope it will come a retreat away from everyday chaos. It will bring comfort, a place to exchange conversation, a sense of community and connection. It will feel like home.
Sandy gifted me this plaque and I can't wait to post it on the property. Thank you, Sandy! Happy Mother's Day! I love you forever.
