We decided to take matters into our own hands and preempt Mother Nature. With a weather forecast of 30+ inches of snow within 30 hours, and wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour overnight, we did a thing. It was a difficult decision, and it felt weird to do, but in order to relieve the stress of heavy snow and shearing winds from damaging our hoop house frame, we decided to slash open the plastic prior to the storm. Even though the plastic on this hoop house was going to be retired this spring anyway, we still had to think long and hard about this decision (we have a couple of row crops overwintering inside). We figured that replacing plastic would be more preferable than having to replace plastic AND broken frame. I have to say… this action was stressful to commit to, but then definitely relieved a lot of our stress during the storm: One less (big!) thing to worry about. And our other two smaller hoop houses are holding up so far🤞. Hope you are safe and warm.
