A little late this week but some things are worth the wait! The smoke has made it hard to be outside and get good pictures of the birds. Yesterday afternoon was breezy enough to make it tolerable for a short while and I was able to get this sweet picture of Henrietta enjoying a roost in the shade. Stay safe out there everyone, Henrietta insists on it!

We are disappointed to announce we will not be able to set up today at the Skandia farmers market due to the smoke from the wildfires. We will hopefully be back next week with all the fresh eggs for you!

Paige took an egg that was pipped and another mother hen gave up on. She had the patience to let it hatch and is now mothering it all around the property!

We have babies everywhere at Cherrywood Acres. We decided to let things happen more naturally this year instead of focused breeding projects. Which has been amazing and fun to watch chickens raise chickens (or turkeys raise chickens because we don’t do anything normal). However, it leaves a mystery guessing game as to who the parents are. It’s the poultry version of the Maury Povich show around these parts!

We have an eagle problem. Of all the predators to have, an eagle is the worst. They are amazing hunters and there is nothing you can do about them. As much as I am fascinated and awed by these incredible creatures, I would prefer them to stay a little further away from my farm. So we are building an army of crows!! Crows are great for chasing away eagles and hawks. They may pester the chickens but they won’t eat them, which is a better deal in my opinion. We built a raised platform and added some treats to entice the crows. We will keep you posted on the progress!
