On June 17, when HOP lost funding, we added a 50 cent “community food fee” to each credit card transaction at market. To date, that’s raised $864, and we’ve finally figured out how to get that back to the community. Thanks to for tapping me in to the “how”!
Any customer needing to stretch their food dollars can simply hand us this card off our table or tell us to “please charge the community.”
We’re working on more ways to build this in to our pricing; in the meantime, we’ll also have a “give a dollar” jar on our table to collect contributions to keep the community card flush.
I have every confidence in our ability to raise funds for the card. The part that worries me is that receiving can be so much more difficult than giving.
And so I’ll say this: in the weeks after Helene, a customer had a very large fundraiser for us, a business in our county reimbursed us for a LOT of egg donations, TRACTOR paid us for eggs they distributed for free- they bought 50% of our eggs for a while when we lost all our wholesale customers overnight. Friends and neighbors delivered eggs for us, they helped us pack eggs, and we received several grants. I felt undeserving of it all because so many people were worse off than us. Over time, I realized that despite not being the worst off, it was really really hard for us too and it was okay to receive help. I also realized that receiving others’ help was a gift to them too. I literally had a friend who wouldn’t accept any food until I asked if she could deliver a box of eggs to her church weekly. She needed to contribute in order to receive.
Truth be told, I’m really struggling with selling food while 50 million Americans are experiencing an increase in their hunger. Please use this card. It’s me bringing eggs to my church.
