Cooler weather means project time!!!! Added a floor and partial wall to the ram shed, almost completed my pickup truck bed livestock hauler, and surprisingly all my white lambs, 1 ewe and 3 ram lambs, have been reserved as breeding stock for fall! Minus Link who is staying here. I love my white sheep but a lot of people avoid it because it’s a dominant gene so I was surprised!

I am so happy Link got mostly his dam, Tove’s, fleece! I know it’s still has lamb fleece and the real test will be next year when he is a wether but it’s looking promising!

We were really lucky the storm barely lasted a minute by us but that minute was pretty brutal. Luckily the damage we experienced is all fixable but have heard it hit way worse in other areas near us 😔

Ghost the goose has been becoming restless as the only goose to have hatched from his clutch of 6 eggs so decided to bring him/her outside with us today! One more week till the goose egg and 3 call duck eggs in the incubator should be hatching to keep him company! Toulouse geese have a breeding season and so far we are super lucky that the last egg our seller got from her geese this year is developing well 🤞

This one hurts to share. But I think it’s important so when things like this happen to other shepherds, they know they aren’t alone. I knew there were risks when I put out the fan for the summer heat and I kept a carefully eye on it when it was hot. As it cooled down I got complacent and left it up because my old lady alpacas really enjoyed sitting in front of it blowing on their face. Yesterday, I found Dottla’s boy lamb dead with the cord wrapped around his neck tightly 3 times. The fact the end got stuck and didn’t unplug pi**es me off and I fully blame myself for this situation. While he wasn’t my best of the season, he was the exact type of lamb you want most of your flock to be. Good growth and amazing parasite resistance. The type you sorta forget about because they don’t cause any issues. His main mark against him was his tighter horns and I think they contributed a lot to his death as they kept the cord around his head. I have never been able to salvage the hide from any of my losses before and while I didn’t want to, I forced myself to do it sort of as punishment. And I feel it helped heal me a little and wasn’t as bad as I thought. At least something will come out of his death and my irrational fear I always have of thinking maybe they aren’t dead and I’m burying them alive, was removed after this process.
