Newest little calf was born while we were at AI class, but he is surprisingly dark red and just as wild as a March hare, as my Nannie used to say.

His mama is a registered Charolais (and our last heifer), Valentine, who is as calm and sweet as a cow can be. Genetics are weird! His sire was our registered Red Angus, Winston.

We named him HVA Clyde to match his sister, Clover, who thinks he might be fun once he’ll play with her.

Brand new baby on the farm this morning! Mama Jeanie did so good, she’s a veteran/pro mama.

HVA Clover!

She is one of our last calves we will have out of Red Winston, so she’s a special little sweetheart for us on this intensely hot June morning!

Some days farming is easy… well, at least not so hard. Some days you load one calf, only to have to pull another calf for a first calf heifer, spend an hour warming him up and clearing up his breathing, then run to town for supplies you thought you already had, and after all that… all you can do is pray that Mama does her part.

And she did! And she had a MASSIVE calf. This is why Juliet is our favorite (don’t tell the others).

And yes, he’s alive, we assume maybe that’s how he was sleeping in the womb!

Of course she waited til it was 16 degrees (feels like 7) to have her litter! But HVA Louisiana is in her barn, with her own personal hay bale, feed bowl and water trough, living her Best Mama Life with her litter of 10, on this incredibly cold, icy January morning. Babies are up and moving and eating - Louie did good! 🐷 💖

When you’ve only been fed 3x today, have 3 new bales of hay out and a couple of protein tubs. You still gotta check it out anytime somebody walks near the feed barrels 😂 🐮 🤷🏻‍♀️
