Our first season of raising pigs is almost at end - the final group goes to the butcher next Thursday. But we wanted to show a shot of what the pigs have been enjoying munching on. We used a cool and a warm season mix from @greencoverseed to grow great forage for the pigs. Here you can see some of the kale, plantain and clover.

We are pleased to have another addition to our co-op farm store! Our friends, Manuel and Claire Saldana, operate In Tune homestead in Warrenton and will be selling their non-GMO rabbit at our farm store. They have been diligently working to produce high-quality rabbit for years now.

They are selling it at $11/lb and each rabbit is roughly 3 lbs in size.

Come on by Fridays or Saturdays, 1 to 5 pm to pick one up!

Yesterday we enjoyed maybe the tastiest chicken we've ever cooked.

We marinated one of the fresh chickens that we processed on Friday. The marinade was lemon juice, salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, cumin, a little bit of sugar, basil, and oil.

Threw it on the grill for about 30 minutes and then let it rest. It was so tender, juicy, and flavorful, and much of the fat had rendered so it was easy to eat every last bit of meat and skin.

We picked up our 5th batch of Royal Red chicks from the post office yesterday afternoon. Very happy to come out this morning and find them so content.

When chicks are in the brooder we can tell if they are happy if they are:

1. Evenly spaced through the brooder
2. Relatively quiet
3. Have full crops

These 330 chicks are happy!

Love watching and listening to cattle graze. These guys are enjoying the lush grass that the chickens fertilized 6 weeks ago.

Can you help us spread the word by sharing this post with anyone you know who feeds a raw or semi-raw diet to their dogs?

Our pasture-raised, non-gmo chicken backs, feet, and heads (yes, chicken heads!) are just $1/lb. All three are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients (e.g. collagen) that are great for dogs (and for people, too!).

"This is Jonathan sorting out five head of cattle to take to the butcher. If it looks incredibly peaceful, that is because it is!

Living Pastures Farm is essentially a one-person operation - Jonathan! Raising 30 head of cattle, 2,000 heritage meat chickens, and 25 pigs, not to mention all the administration and store tasks falls primarily to Jonathan. He has been creatively fine-tuning the farming operations to be low-stress for the animals and yield better results. No clanging metal, no sorting panels, just a couple of cleverly placed reels and lots of fresh grass. This is just one of many examples. (You should see his chicken setup!)

Moments like this I think his engineering degree paid off! But really I think it more comes down to his daily commitment to treat the soil, livestock and people really, really well. These creative and efficient systems he develops make his farming practices ever more ethical, humane, and regenerative."

Chicken Back Sale!

With fresh chickens coming in we need to move the last of our 2021 chicken back inventory. Our regular price is $2.00/lb. They will be on sale for $1.00/lb until we sell out.

Why buy chicken backs? For making nutritious and delicious chicken bone broth. The health benefits of bone broth are well documented. And there are so many good uses for it: soups and stew, cooking rice, pasta or vegetables, or even drinking straight!

If you have any bone-broth loving friends, let them know! $1/lb for pasture-raised chicken backs is a steal!

We moved our first batch of chickens out from the brooder and onto pasture this past Saturday.

You can see how much they love being on pasture by the way they devour the fresh grass. Here's a photo that shows the contrast between where the chickens foraged for 24 hours and the grass just outside their shelter.

I swung by 2nd street in Warrenton yesterday to drop a sample chicken by Cast Iron Craft House. They are a new farm-to-table and local brews restaurant opening in a few months. Wesley, one of the owners, shared their vision for the restaurant and it sounds like they will be a great addition to Warrenton!

@livingpasturesfarm delivered a test chicken today for us to sample! Another #keepitlocal opportunity for us and our local farmers. We are excited about the possibilities to partner with y'all!

Our apologies, but we are going to have the farm store closed tomorrow (Saturday). We know this is very last minute, but tomorrow is looking like a perfect storm of sorts:

1. Sickness in our house.
2. We have a new-born.
3. We are getting more snow than expected, and the driveway to the store will be steep and snowy.

We'll be back at it on Friday 2/4. Looking forward to it!

Stay safe out there!

Again, we apologize for such a last-minute announcement, store closings will be very rare, but we appreciate everyone's understanding.

Thank you!

We are now taking reservations for our whole, half, and quarter beef! You can reserve your beef on our website here:

https://livingpasturesfarm.com/grass-fed-beef/

All the details are on our website, but here they are as well:

1. We are taking cattle to the butcher once a month May to October.

2. Choose a whole, half, or quarter. Wholes and halves can be cut however you like! Then choose which month you'd like your beef. (Note, the month you select is when the cow goes to the butcher. It is about 3 weeks later that the beef is ready for pick up).

3. For wholes and halves, we will walk you through the butcher's cut sheet. (Note: all quarters are cut the same way - see our quarter cow product page for a list of the cuts.)

4. Pick up your meat from the farm or have it delivered! We ask that you pick up (or receive delivery) within 3 weeks of when the beef is ready.

"Regenerative agriculture benefits the soil, animals, people and the environment by mimicking the natural relationship between animals and the soil, said Jonathan Elliott, farmer and owner of Living Pastures. Soils used in farms across the country are degraded from mismanagement and “we want to rebuild the soils." This week’s featured CSA recipe is an ode to eating from the ground up. Now, more than ever, there is a call for minimal intervention agriculture. As growers working with a rapidly changing climate, we focus on plants tolerant to our seasonal challenges. This week, we turn our attention to chickweed, a native edible green. Finely chopped into a tabouli-inspired salad, it offers refreshing lift and texture in a dish. We’ve paired it with a voluminous mousse made from Living Pastures Farm chicken liver. If you haven’t explored Living Pastures Farm yet, you’re missing out on a real gem. They rotationally pasture their chickens, offering them stress-free, happy lives spent nibbling on grass, wild herbs, and insects. For our Rundle members, we’ve chosen the latest 2019 Lightwell Survey release “The Weird Ones are Wolves, as our wine pairing. It offers both meaty contrast and lifted relief from the density of the mousse. Learning how to eat seasonally is central to the Artemisia CSA experience. Our weekly recipes guide our members through the ebbs and flows our foodweb has to offer.
