Merry Christmas! 🎄Store is closed today for the holiday. Will be open again on Friday/Saturday next week. Enjoy your family and your feasts!!
I didn't realize just how much rain we got yesterday and this morning until I drove down to grab a few hay bales this morning. Carter's Run had popped over one of the banks!
"It's nice to share good things"Â
Wise words from my 3-year old daughter.
You can find lots of truly good and truly local foods produced by our family and our fellow co-op farmers at the Farm Store to share as gifts. Some ideas:
- Delicious 100% grass-fed steaks (raised by Ellen and me) and her blends (by Katharine Adams of Stallard Road Farm)
- Unbeatable duck breast (Lion's Rest Farm)
- A jar of honey & herbal tea (Stallard Road Farm)
- Refreshing kombucha (Remnant Farm) to share at your holiday gathering.
- Maybe our favorite hostess gift - eggs (Fenceline Flowers Farm) and sage sausage (Living Pastures Farm/Lion's Rest Farm)
One of our favorite things is to cook good, nourishing food for others. As we plan our holiday meals and craft our Christmas gifts, we remain so grateful for our community of customers who share our food at their own tables!
Sirloin steak! We love cooking these large, bone-in steaks. They are very flavorful and surprisingly tender - at least tender enough that our 11-month old can eat it, haha.
As we like to say in our house, if you need a steak knife, you need a different steak.
Enjoy them with your whole/half/quarter cow or pick some up at our farm store (Fridays and Saturdays 1 to 5 pm at 9577 Cliff Mills Road, Marshall, VA 20115).

Our first season of raising pigs is almost at end - the final group goes to the butcher next Thursday. But we wanted to show a shot of what the pigs have been enjoying munching on. We used a cool and a warm season mix from to grow great forage for the pigs. Here you can see some of the kale, plantain and clover.
Good forage = tasty pork
We are pleased to have another addition to our co-op farm store! Our friends, Manuel and Claire Saldana, operate In Tune homestead in Warrenton and will be selling their non-GMO rabbit at our farm store. They have been diligently working to produce high-quality rabbit for years now.
They are selling it at $11/lb and each rabbit is roughly 3 lbs in size.
Come on by Fridays or Saturdays, 1 to 5 pm to pick one up!

Picking up these beautiful rib steaks and much more (sirloin steaks, brisket, ribs, stew meat, New York strips, etc.) from our butcher right now. Then back to stock the farm store freezer! Come on out this weekend for these cuts of beef and fresh chicken tomorrow!
Yesterday we enjoyed maybe the tastiest chicken we've ever cooked.
We marinated one of the fresh chickens that we processed on Friday. The marinade was lemon juice, salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, cumin, a little bit of sugar, basil, and oil.
Threw it on the grill for about 30 minutes and then let it rest. It was so tender, juicy, and flavorful, and much of the fat had rendered so it was easy to eat every last bit of meat and skin.
Fresh chicken today and tomorrow! Load up for your July 4th weekend!
Plus dragon fruit kombucha is back on tap!
We picked up our 5th batch of Royal Red chicks from the post office yesterday afternoon. Very happy to come out this morning and find them so content.
When chicks are in the brooder we can tell if they are happy if they are:
1. Evenly spaced through the brooder
2. Relatively quiet
3. Have full crops
These 330 chicks are happy!
Love watching and listening to cattle graze. These guys are enjoying the lush grass that the chickens fertilized 6 weeks ago.
Fresh whole chickens and chicken parts tomorrow! Come out to the farm store between 1 and 5 pm!
Can you help us spread the word by sharing this post with anyone you know who feeds a raw or semi-raw diet to their dogs?
Our pasture-raised, non-gmo chicken backs, feet, and heads (yes, chicken heads!) are just $1/lb. All three are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients (e.g. collagen) that are great for dogs (and for people, too!).
"This is Jonathan sorting out five head of cattle to take to the butcher. If it looks incredibly peaceful, that is because it is!
Living Pastures Farm is essentially a one-person operation - Jonathan! Raising 30 head of cattle, 2,000 heritage meat chickens, and 25 pigs, not to mention all the administration and store tasks falls primarily to Jonathan. He has been creatively fine-tuning the farming operations to be low-stress for the animals and yield better results. No clanging metal, no sorting panels, just a couple of cleverly placed reels and lots of fresh grass. This is just one of many examples. (You should see his chicken setup!)
Moments like this I think his engineering degree paid off! But really I think it more comes down to his daily commitment to treat the soil, livestock and people really, really well. These creative and efficient systems he develops make his farming practices ever more ethical, humane, and regenerative."
- Ellen
The egg fridge is well-stocked with delicious pasture-raised, non-gmo eggs from two or our co-op members!
Just $5/dozen!
Come grab a dozen or two or three today or tomorrow, 1 - 5 pm.
Chicken Back Sale!
With fresh chickens coming in we need to move the last of our 2021 chicken back inventory. Our regular price is $2.00/lb. They will be on sale for $1.00/lb until we sell out.
Why buy chicken backs? For making nutritious and delicious chicken bone broth. The health benefits of bone broth are well documented. And there are so many good uses for it: soups and stew, cooking rice, pasta or vegetables, or even drinking straight!
If you have any bone-broth loving friends, let them know! $1/lb for pasture-raised chicken backs is a steal!
Come snag one of these beautiful fresh chickens! Butchered this morning!
These are our Royal Red broilers - can't beat the flavor!

Just a short note about farm store hours for this weekend. We will be:
CLOSED this Friday, April 15th for Good Friday.
OPEN as usual (1 to 5 pm) on Saturday, April 16th.
We moved our first batch of chickens out from the brooder and onto pasture this past Saturday.
You can see how much they love being on pasture by the way they devour the fresh grass. Here's a photo that shows the contrast between where the chickens foraged for 24 hours and the grass just outside their shelter.
Front Royal Delivery Tomorrow!
And we've still got our big chickens on sale - available at the farm store and for our deliveries!
https://livingpasturesfarm.com/pasture-raised-chicken-delivery/

I swung by 2nd street in Warrenton yesterday to drop a sample chicken by Cast Iron Craft House. They are a new farm-to-table and local brews restaurant opening in a few months. Wesley, one of the owners, shared their vision for the restaurant and it sounds like they will be a great addition to Warrenton!
delivered a test chicken today for us to sample! Another opportunity for us and our local farmers. We are excited about the possibilities to partner with y'all!
