The first photo is evening milking on Friday night. The second is evening milking on Sunday, after all the snow had stopped. I'd say it was 12-14" inches before it settled and froze.

The snow sure is beautiful, but it makes everything more difficult. Usually it's just a few days and the snow melts off, but the two week forecast looks like this snow is going to hangout for a while.

We've made tamales and ice cream so far. Next up is homemade granola. If we're all stuck at home, we may as well spend our time cooking. 😁

Willie was ready for some 4 wheeler sledding this morning and helped with most of the chores before he got too cold. Chores were definitely more difficult this morning than yesterday. The snow was deeper and was more slick somehow- the 4 wheeler made it around but not without LOTS of sliding. The ice was SO much thicker on the water buckets for the calves. It took a splitting ax, not just a sledge hammer to get them broken open this morning.

We definitely couldn't use the trailer for water buckets today. Just one bucket at a time. Chickens are fine, but definitely not fans of the weather. The ducks, however, seem to be pretty happy. 🤷

Josh got the tractor started with some effort and the cows were happy to have more hay. They seem to be staying warm enough, but boy can they eat at this temperature! They're learning to shake off their snow blankets periodically.

I'm so thankful for intense heat from the wood stove when I come in. It seems like it takes hours to bake me warm again, and then it'll be time for chores.

Why is he named Thomas Paine, you ask?

It's just Common Sense. 😂

Fall Photo Dump! It has been a busy month on the farm as we prepare for winter.

Josh got the last of the hay put up for winter, another beautiful heifer calf, Ruby, was born, we fully transitioned milking from the "rabbit shed" to the parlor in the round top hay barn. We also had Willie's birthday party and Trish got her first deer- an 8 point buck! We're all so proud!

Having power properly run to the hay barn and converting the "rabbit shed" into Josh's new leather shop and my office has been a huge project and it's all finally falling into place. It's a little sad to think about all the memories we've had milking with our cows and kids in the rabbit shed, but there will be so many more memories of milking in the parlor and making amazing new projects in what will be the leather shop.

The summer has turned hot and dry the last couple of months and the cows are feeling it!
The cows are also hot and dry while we eagerly wait on Kassi and Porsche to calve. Dairy farmers without milk is a tough way to be! Brownie is finished with her nurse cow duties for the year and has moved back in with the big cows.

Meanwhile, the kids are back to school already. I'm so grateful for my time home with the kids this summer. It was so wonderful to be present with the whole family for a couple of months. We spent extra time reading and doing math, playing cards, watching movies, going to the river, spending time with friends far and near, and they learned more farm and garden chores than ever before.

Here's to another great school year and hopefully 🤞a cooler, wetter autumn to come!
