PSA: Harvest continues at Myers Farms. Soybeans were set back this summer due to the smog we received from Canadian brush fires so we started combining nearly two weeks later then normal. The crazy amount of rain that occurred during October forced us set and wait between days as things dried out. Bean harvest is done with two combines with a combined width of 90’ so we can wipe out a field rather quickly. This year we did have to dry beans in our grain dryer to “knock” a few points off of the moisture before we store them in our grain bins, or ship them out. We finished soybeans November 7.
Corn was started the next day. We are rolling daily, but on days there may be a heavy frost we must wait for that to get “burned” off by the sun or it can freeze the interior of our combine. In corn we use one combine with a 16 row head. We have the same number of acres of corn as we do beans. With corn, drying time takes much longer, as the kernels have not dried much this fall especially with the rains we received in October. So that means we could harvest all day and our dryer has to run continuously and basically never shuts off.
As we anticipate Holidays and other special events ahead of us, our littles grow weary as the Papa’s and Daddys are pulled to the fields. The ones spent tending to them grow tired and are ready to be done as well but the reality is we won’t be for quite some time.
Encouraging words might sound more like, “How is harvest coming along, vs are you done yet?” To put it in perspective it would be similar to someone one asking you in mid-May after you’ve mowed your lawn a few times in the year, “are you done mowing for the year?” I know it seems silly, but similar to how we can feel as we plug our way through harvest season.
Peace to you all….and I am always happy to announce when our harvest is complete for another year.
