Built for the Smallholding: Animals That Fed a Thousand Years of History 🇬🇧🌾
Long before modern industrial agriculture changed the food system, there was the British smallholding. These were small, self-sufficient plots of land where a family's survival depended entirely on the resilience, utility, and quality of their livestock.
The animals we raise here at Parkfield Farm honor the original Scottish emigrees who farmed this land. These breeds did not evolve in a laboratory or a factory setting. They evolved hand-in-hand with human families over centuries, adapting to turn open pastures, orchard windfalls, and rough forage into premium sustenance.
Our fields and coops are alive with a literal tapestry of the British Isles:
🐷 Gloucestershire Old Spots : The legendary "orchard pig," famous for its calm demeanor and unmatched, deeply marbled pork.
🐑 Black Welsh Mountain Sheep & Dexter Cattle : Thrifty, hardy grazers that excel on open pasture.
🐓 Our Heritage Poultry Collection :
: The Dorking : One of the oldest recorded breeds in history, prized since Roman times for its unique five toes and legendary status as the ultimate table fowl.
: The Scots Dumpy : A wonderfully distinct, short-legged historic treasure bred to withstand the rugged conditions of old Scottish smallholds.
: The Sussex & Cream Legbar : Traditional powerhouses of the British countryside, providing exceptional dual-purpose utility and a beautiful rainbow of eggs (including the Legbar's famous pastel blues).
🦆 Welsh Harlequin Ducks : Highly active, stunningly beautiful foragers that keep our land pest-free while outperforming themselves with rich, creamy eggs.
When you choose heritage meat and eggs, you aren’t just buying dinner. You are actively preserving a living timeline of agricultural history that was nearly lost to the modern world.
