Green Mountain Curlies, Inc.

Green Mountain Curlies, Inc. Nestled in the mountains of Vermont, we are a small, family-operated farm, home to 4 American Curly horses for over 20 years.

Our horses live, primarily, outside with plenty of fresh air and pasture. During the winter they have run-ins in paddocks that allow them to freely move. We train them using multiple methods with an accent on clicker-training.

Although we no longer breed horses, we are always interested in the horses we *have* bred and are delighted when an owner reaches out to share photos and stories with us.
We were recently contacted by *GMC Andrea's Ankti's owner (whom we called Andy) and Avery shared some fabulous photos with us. Avery gave her a new call name when she purchased her some years back, though if she cares to I will let her explain how the name came to be; however, Porsche as she is now know, has become a wonderful addition to their family.
Avery has ridden in something called Westernaire. This I had never heard of before, but I have learned that it is a group based in Golden, Colorado, and formed in 1949. They promote horsemanship, teamwork, and leadership, and their members performing in rodeos, parades, and specialized acts like trick riding. It seems a great way for young folks to learn life-long horse skills. Avery has shared that her time in Westernaire is done; but, a younger sibling will continue with Porsche in it.

I'm sharing here some photos that Avery is allowing us to share. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

It is with the greatest sadness the we share of the passing Dude. He came to us in October 2005 as a rescue. We ended up adopting him and not just fostering him. This was a sudden illness and we had no time to prepare ourselves. And so I share these photos to help me in easing the pain of this sudden loss. Please give all of your four-legged loves extra love tonight. Thank you.

Today was Vet Spring visit day! Shots, check-ups and teeth done. Here is Beau getting his teeth floated, as it is called. Because horses eat such course food it wears their teeth down, sometimes unevenly.
Did you know that a 2 year old's head will weigh more than a 20 year old's? That is because all of the teeth the horse needs is contained within their jaws and as they wear them down more tooth erupts!
As a horse ages eventually the teeth become senior teeth and fall out.
The other 3 photos of one of Babe's teeth that was loose so the vet removed it.
Amazing!

We have noticed that we're getting a LOT more traffic, but I don't think it's because you're interested in learning about American Curly Horses.
Whatever brings you here, welcome. Feel free to pose a question, just know that we expect honesty, politeness, and integrity.

In 2016, we built a hay barn on the site of our original hoop arena that collapsed. At the time we couldn't afford to roof it. Since 2021 we searched for someone who could roof it for us, but no one was interested. This year we decided to just get 'er done. Between afternoons off, Saturdays, and the past 3 Sundays with Stephen's and Erica 's help, we pulled down the tarp, put up lathing, and got sheet metal up. There is still a bit to do, like tenting the ridge, and closing up the sides, but we are 99% complete. Thanks so much to Stephen and Erica for their help!

We are still here on the farm, waiting for it to be warm enough for the horses to go onto pasture. In the meanwhile all four have had their spring vet visit, are healthy, patiently waiting.
This year Babe is 28, Silken 24, Beau 23, and Dude is 19.

The best horses in Heaven
they have no tail.
This is a rule they all know
without fail.
For when a new horse arrives
with a short cut bob,
they all know that this horse
did a very good job.

His owner could not bear
to part with her friend
so she saved his tail,
wrapped in ribbons
and in braids,
to hold with his memory
in a very loving way.

To enter Heaven
without a tail
is an honor,
a message,
that without fail
announces to everyone,
far and wide
that this horse
was more than a wonderful ride.

But this horse was loved and cherished by one
and when his time serving on this Earth was done
he left behind a broken heart and a soul
from which he never will part.
