We lost Buffy duck today (officially named Lisa from The Simpsons). We have a large population of fox in our area and have been seeing one on our game cameras almost every night (also a bobcat). Fox are smart enough to figure out that if they can't get them at night because they are secure in their coop they will hunt them during the day. Normally we keep the birds in a reasonably secure large run with a 6 foot fence but it's been so hot we have been letting them out more so at least the ducks and geese can cool off in the pond. I found feathers and blood right in front of one of our game cameras so we pulled all the cards assuming we'd see a fox. Instead we saw a bald eagle grab her and proceed to tear her apart right in front of the camera. Hundreds of pictures of Buffy geting torn apart still alive and struggling to escape. Although the biologist in me can appreciate the majesty of these huge birds, the pet owner part of me is highly traumatized. And then I found Buffy's body a few yards away, mostly uneaten. So now all the birds will be kept in their much smaller covered run until the eagle gets tired of waiting for another chance or we can figure out a way to at least partially cover their huge run.

A comparison of size. Lucky who is only 24 hours younger than big sister Minnie, is significantly smaller, likely due to his odd neck development. In the second picture the top two are only 1 week apart in age but the size difference is striking. and geese grow so fast they will look close to full grown by only 8 weeks old, but won't be at their final weight until closer to 6 months.

We now have three Pilgrim . This is 3 day old Muffin. She has a big sister Minnie who is 10 days old and already four times bigger. They also have a brother, Lucky, 9 days old. Lucky was born with a twisted neck, I think because he was not positioned right in his egg. I started out helping him to eat and drink, day and night. He's been getting extra vitamins in case he has wry neck but I suspect they won't help. Meanwhile he has learned to eat and drink on his own and while still a little unsteady can get around pretty well, just a little lopsided.
