Hi friends! 👋

Between the summer heat, hungry insects, and a few four-legged visitors who apparently didn't get the memo that we're trying to grow vegetables for you, the garden has had its share of challenges lately. 😉

But we're harvesting what looks good and getting ready for another Saturday at C-Street City Market!

We'll have a variety of our seasonal vegetables along with our handcrafted pastries, but quantities of some produce will be limited this week. If you have your heart set on something fresh from the garden, we'd recommend coming early for the best selection.

And with another warm market day ahead, don't forget to bring some water and stay hydrated while you shop. 💧

Hi friends! 👋

What do you do when the garden gives you more cherry tomatoes than you know what to do with? 🍅 That was the challenge that we had this week.

Cory took up the challenge to find a recipe and found one for a savory clafoutis (pronounced klah-foo-tee). It's somewhere between a crustless quiche and a tender baked custard—a mixture of eggs, cream, and just enough flour to give it structure.

From there, I improvised. I threw in the cherry tomatoes along with diced bratwurst, chopped olives and scallions, and shredded cheddar cheese - not anywhere close to the recipe, but I followed the spirit of it. 😉

But since I strayed from the recipe, the cooking time became more of a suggestion. Forty minutes at 350 F resulted in a 75%-done clafoutis you see here.

Lesson learned for next time - and there will be a next time, because once it was actually cooked through, it was delicious. 😋

Sometimes our customers teach us a thing or two. 🧡

For the longest time, our go-to way for cooking beets was simple: into the slow cooker with about an inch of water until tender.

But since we started selling at the market, we've heard from so many of you about how much you enjoy roasted beets. This weekend, curiosity finally got the better of us. 😉

We cut up a mix of our red and Chioggia beets, tossed them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic granules, then roasted them at 375°F for about 40–45 minutes.

The verdict? We get it now. 😋

Compared with slow cooking, the roasted beets had a firmer, more satisfying bite. The olive oil and seasonings created a savory exterior that paired beautifully with the beets' natural earthy sweetness—and those lightly browned caramelized edges were especially tasty.

We may officially be converts. 🧡

We truly enjoy swapping ideas with the people who visit our table. This is one of our favorite things about the market. So thank you to everyone who encouraged us to give roasting a try!

Kohlrabi is one of those veggies that people ask, "What is that???". We feel bad for the kohlrabi, so we're here to be its advocate.

Peel off the tougher exterior and you'll find a crisp, juicy vegetable with a mild flavor and gentle sweetness. It tastes somewhere between a crisp apple, broccoli stem, and mild cabbage.

Here are 4 different ways you can prepare it:

🍏 Raw: Peel it, slice it, eat it like an apple.
🥗 Slaw: Shred it with carrots and a simple dressing.
🥙 Sandwiches or wraps: Layered in for a fresh, satisfying crunch.
🔥 Roasted: Cut into cubes, toss with oil, salt & pepper, roast until caramelized, which brings out even more of its natural sweetness

So hopefully you have some appreciation for the poor little kohlrabi.

While croissants may be my particular corner of the baking world, I also have great respect for bakers who devote themselves to mastering a different one.

The Breadatarian () brings that kind of dedication to sourdough and fresh-milled grains, with a philosophy centered on wholesome ingredients and nourishing food.

Cory has been enjoying her fresh-milled flour loaf this week, usually with a good swipe of butter. 😉

It's a wonderfully hearty, flavorful loaf, and I especially appreciate the thought and intention she puts into her baking. It's always a pleasure to recognize good work from a fellow baker.
