Justin Norr is a friend and colleague in Utah who reached out to share a story with us and all of you with the moral of the story being to always be prepared for the unexpected!

I had a crazy experience out at my dry farm in Promontory, Utah last month. Being 45 minutes from fire and EMS response, I was grateful that I had planned and prepared for any emergencies. After 10 days of hard work swathing and baling fall forage with my daughter's help, a bearing on the swather auger went bad, causing a small fire. Without a fire extinguisher, I had to think fast and act quickly to put it out. Always be prepared for the unexpected!

New study sheds light on the mental health struggles of our hardworking farmers. Chronic fatigue acts as a mediator between loneliness at work, autonomy, workload, government policies and regulations and life satisfaction. Let's support our agricultural workers and address their psychological burden." https://tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1059924X.2023.2289967

Long-time researcher challenges traditional notions of incident reporting

“Using ‘accident’ avoids a serious investigation of the event, and it hampers efforts to alter unsafe environments or conditions in which children are present,” wrote Lee in an open-access commentary recently published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Agromedicine. “Child Farm Injuries are Never ‘Accidents,’” a commentary by Barbara Lee, is available at

Congratulations to Barbara Lee, Ph.D., and Matthew Keifer, M.D., M.P.H., who contributed a chapter titled “Rural and Agricultural Environments” to the recently published second edition of the Textbook of Children's Environmental Health (Oxford University Press). The book has been thoroughly updated and revised to reflect the tremendous changes that have occurred in the field during the 10 years since the previous edition. Lee and Keifer’s 16-page Chapter 21 addresses topics such as:

- Contrasts between rural and urban environmental facts, including access to health and dental care, increase response time to injury events, and diversity of populations at risk.
- Fatal and nonfatal injuries and major safety strategies.
- Weather and climate hazards.
- Zoonoses and infectious disease (with a comprehensive table listing out disease agents, characteristics, and symptoms).
- Approaches to community-level safety, health and well-being.

Other chapters address pertinent topics such as exposures to volatile organic chemicals, pesticides, lead, noise and ionizing radiation.
