After our last post about the farm closing down, I’d like to answer some of your burning questions. So…here’s what’s happening next:

šŸ”¶ We still have some of our pasture-raised chicken in stock and would love for you to have the opportunity to purchase some before it’s gone. We currently have:

Stock Packs
Drumsticks (A LOT of drumsticks lol)
Thighs
Livers & Hearts
Feet
Whole Chickens

We also have lots of our T-shirts in stock in varying sizes, and we’d love to share these with the community at cost ($10/each).

While supplies last, you can still make a purchase on our website for these items, and we will happily coordinate with you on either free delivery or pickup at the farm.

šŸ”¶ Starting today, our farm store will no longer be open on Saturdays. However, you are still welcome to pick up your online orders in person, and we will coordinate with you on whatever day/time works best for you

šŸ”¶ We will still offer deliveries on Thursdays until we run out of chicken.

šŸ”¶ We are currently selling off farm equipment, chicken shelters, and will soon be offering our full CAD designs and instructions for our chicken shelters as a purchasable PDF download on our website.

Some of the big items like our Featherman processing equipment, trailer, and feed have already been sold.

If you are interested in our mobile chicken shelters, brooder equipment, processing tools, buckets, totes, or other pieces from our farm, please reach out and we’ll be happy to share with you what we’re selling.

šŸ”¶ As we wrap things up here at Breakaway Pastures, I would love to recommend another farmer you can support that’s raising chicken with as much care as we did. Julie at Hidden Haven Pastures has been a huge mentor and supporter of us over the past year.

She shares the same values for healthy nutritious chicken as we do, and stocks her products at Bountiful Blessings Farm Fresh Produce weekly. I can’t recommend her products enough as your next best source for locally-raised and pasture-grazed chicken.

Thank you to everyone who’s reached out with kind words of support. It means a ton to us during this tough transition period ā¤ļø

This is a tough one we’ve been putting off for a while, but here goes…

The farm is closing.

We canceled the last of our hatchery orders, processed our remaining batches, and have started selling off some of our equipment.

I know your first question is going to be ā€œwtf, why??ā€

In short? Farming is…really, really hard.

Hard on your body. Hard on your mental health. Hard on your wallet. Hard on your marriage.

Of course we knew all of this going into it, but we underestimated just how all-consuming this venture would be.

Our goal was to get this farm to a scale within 2 years that we could hire employees, quit our off-farm jobs, and focus entirely on growing this business.

We started with $20,000 of our own money, 7 acres we purchased with a VA loan, and just the two of us to get it going.

…we made it 3 months before burning out entirely.

Now granted, we’ve been working our ass off over this for more than 4 years, so the burnout had been building for a while.

But even with all the support we’ve received, the help from family and friends, and the incredible success this has been in the short time it’s been around…we’ve made the difficult decision to shutter the farm and try to recoup some of our investment.

In all honesty…our family wasn’t ready for this.

We thought we had it fully mapped out, but we didn’t anticipate just how much strain that jumping headfirst into this new lifestyle would put on us and our marriage.

This is entirely new for both Zara and I, and we have to give ourselves grace for discovering quickly that we weren’t as equipped for this as we thought.

Breakaway Pastures was not a failure. We learned so much and were quickly achieving goals far in advance.

It was amazing to witness it come together…but this is what’s best for our family.

And family will always be more important than anything else.

Thank you all so much for the overwhelming support for us new farmers and our lofty goal of feeding the community.

For now…we’re going to focus on sharing all of our successes and failures so that others can pick up where we’re leaving off.

We’ll provide an update soon on what happens next for the farm, stay tuned.

We’re back!šŸ¹šŸŽ‰

After a quick vacation to Florida and a cruise through Caribbean, we are recharged and ready to welcome you back to the farm!

Our farm store is open tomorrow from 10am to 4pm, and we will resume deliveries and pickups at The Homeschool Room this Thursday! šŸ“†

Thanks for your patience as we recharged our batteries and cleared our heads, we’re excited to see you at the farm tomorrow! 😁

We’re taking a little break.

Something I didn’t understand until recently was that once you become a farmer…that’s about it. It’s pretty difficult to be anything else at the same time, unless you have a lot of money (because you definitely don’t have a lot of time).

Although this farm has been nothing but a massive success, we’ve become quickly burnt out from running things by ourselves.

Processing chickens every two weeks

Deliveries every Thursday

Running the farm store every Saturday

Moving and feeding chickens every single day

Marketing to the community and fulfilling orders

Picking up feed every month

We severely underestimated the size we needed to start this farm at in order for it to grow to where we can afford employees to help spread out our responsibilities and daily workload. It’s tough doing all this with just two people, and the burnout is real.

So real in fact that we’ve had very little time to just be husband and wife…and that has to be much more important to us than anything else.

So we’re taking a little break.

We processed our last batch of chickens a few weeks ago.

The other batches were sold off to other farmer friends who could continue raising them until processing time.

With no more chickens on the farm for the moment, this has given us just enough breathing room to reevaluate our goals and plan for the future.

And our first step is to take a long overdue vacation this week.

While we’re gone, our farm store will be closed this weekend (14th), there will be no deliveries next Thursday (19th).

We will reopen our farm store June 21st and deliveries the Thursday after that.

We still have lots of chicken in stock and you’re still welcome to place orders with us on our website at www.breakawaypastures.com, we will get every order out as soon as we’re back from our vacation.

As we take a short breather, I’d like to just say thank you to everyone who’s supported our farm and made us a part of their budget every week. We’re truly making a difference in our local food chain and connecting the community with real food.
