Let them be free

The Mustang is not a wild horse in the strictest biological sense — it is a feral horse, descended from animals brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. 🐴 But in the five centuries since those first horses touched North American soil, something happened: the Mustang became as much a part of the American West as the land itself.

The Mustang's ancestors escaped or were released, and they moved into the interior of the continent, adapting to desert heat and mountain cold and the sparse grass of the Great Basin. They became hardier with each generation, their hooves growing dense and strong, their bodies learning efficiency on lean forage. What survived five hundred years of natural selection is not the Spanish barb — it is something new, shaped by the American land.

The Lakota, the Comanche, and other nations built entire cultures around the Mustang. The horse gave them speed, range, hunting capability, and wealth. The relationship between indigenous people and the Mustang changed the history of the continent.

Today, roughly 80,000 Mustangs remain on public lands. They are simultaneously symbol and controversy — icons of freedom at the center of a genuine conflict between ranching, land management, and preservation.

They were born free. That has never really changed.

What does the Mustang symbolize to you?
