DROPSY IN CATFISH AND TREATMENT.
Dropsy in catfish, often a symptom rather than a disease, manifests as abdominal swelling due to fluid accumulation, giving fish a bloated, pinecone-like appearance with protruding scales. It primarily results from bacterial infections, such as Aeromonas or Pseudomonas, thriving in poor water quality, stress, or compromised immune systems. Other causes include parasitic infestations, viral infections, or organ failure, particularly of the kidneys or liver. Symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, clamped fins, and difficulty swimming due to buoyancy issues. Affected fish may isolate themselves or exhibit erratic behavior. Prevention hinges on maintaining optimal water conditionsβregular testing for pH, ammonia, and nitrate levels, alongside consistent tank cleaning, is crucial. A balanced diet rich in vitamins strengthens immunity, while avoiding overcrowding reduces stress. Quarantining new fish prevents pathogen introduction.
Treating dropsy in catfish requires precise measurement and careful application to maximize effectiveness and minimize harm. First, isolate the affected fish in a quarantine tank (10β20 gallons, depending on fish size) to prevent disease spread. Test water parameters using a reliable digital pH meter test kit, ensuring pH is 6.5β7.5, ammonia and nitrite are 0 ppm, and nitrates are below 20 ppm. Perform a 25β30% water change daily, using dechlorinated water matched to the tankβs temperature (24β27Β°C) for most catfish).
For antibiotics, use erythromycin or tetracycline. If mixing drug with the feed, administer 1β2% of the fishβs body weight daily (e.g., 1β2 grams per 100 grams of fish). For water-dosed antibiotics, use 100β200 mg per gallon of water, applied every 24 hours after a partial water change for 5β7 days. For salt baths, dissolve 1β2 teaspoons of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) per gallon of water (1β2% salinity) in a separate container. Submerge the fish for 10β15 minutes daily, monitoring for distress. Provide a vitamin-enriched diet (e.g., sinking pellets with vitamin C) at 1β2% body weight daily. Continue treatment for 7β10 days, observing for reduced bloating or improved activity.
