When you put your garden against the chicken run, it is mandatory to pay the Garden Tax!

The love the proximity to berries and weeds and all sorts of goodies this arrangement offers them! 🤣

I picked raspberries on Monday and then went out of town all week and forgot to remind the farm helper to pick them! 😅

Sooooo many golden raspberries, took almost an hour to pick all the ripe ones. Ended up with 4.5 pounds!!

I love having pasture pigs free to run and play and enjoy large grassy paddocks to forage in all day.

Got home from a several day's trip tonight and got the news that Gravy had been very lethargic and breathing hard today....

Got home from a several day's trip tonight and got the news that Gravy had been very lethargic and breathing hard today. The Pioneer Broiler chicks are 10 wks old now and most of them are as big as my adult laying hens! Gravy is my little runt and she is about 1/3 of their size bit has otherwise been very active and happy. On exam she had her feathers puffed up, she was hunched and depressed, her comb was purple, and she had a belly full of ascites. Given her age and runt status I suspect a congenital heart condition and fulminant heart failure.

The last thing I wanted to do after coming home from a lovely vacation was to cull a sweet favorite chicken, but that is part of being an ethical farmer. No animal deserves to suffer and die overnight cold and struggling to breathe because their caretakers won't take these actions, even when they suck.

Thank you Snohomish County public works for the excellent job clearing out the drainage ditches! The crews were very efficient and the had a great time "supervising" AND also using the activity as an excuse to run around like nutcases. 🤣 I hope y'all had fun watching them pretend to be dragons, I sure did! 🐲 🐎
