So, not a fan of mysteries like this!

I don't need to go inside my coop these days, and it has been at least 3 days since myself or my farm helper has gone inside. Today I happened to open it and found one of my leghorn hens. Shut into the kennel/coop portion of the grow out run.

The auto door to the run has the batteries removed - I doublechecked. The door to the kennel was totally shut like it has been since I shut it all up this spring. It takes effort and pushing in the door to open or close that latch - not something the other chickens could do accidently - especially BOTH directions.

I'm just glad I found her in pretty good condition, it wouldn't allt all be outside the realm of possibility that nobody would have opened that door for another week. 😳

PSA: if your dog or horse is scared of fireworks, THIS is the week to get anxiety meds from your vet!

NOT on July 3rd.

Be proactive.

We can all complain about all the negatives of fireworks, but they are never actually going to go away. 🤷

So get your pet's meds stocked ahead of time, test out dosing. Make a quieter, low stimulation area. Check your fences and gates and barn doors. Crank up the radio. Make sure pets have ID on them in case they did somehow get loose.

Did ya know that when you HANG the flower baskets they are even MORE attractive to naughty ponies? 🤦🤣

In garden rehab news, one of the raised beds did not fare well to being picked up and fell apart due to detioration of the wood.

I put on my DIY determination and am proud to say that I measured and cut new corner reinforcements, got all the old screws out, and the bed newly screwed together successfully!

It won't last forever, but I'll get a few more seasons out of these beds before needing full replacements!

Had to get the chop saw out today. .Any guess what I'm using it for?? 😅

The most effective no-toxin method of rodent control on my property is the Ratinator trap!

I have used it time and again, catching 1-6+ small to medium rats at a time. Usually I get a few catches in a row and then nothing. I take the trap away for a week or so and when I put it back usually get a few more.

Used regularly along with proper livestock feed management techniques it keeps the population under decent control.

I bait with pelleted chicken feed and put in a rat travel corridor. Rats are "baptized" once caught and sent to the Lord.

Everyone that free-ranges their ponies in their backyard has a wading pool/water trough situation going on in the summer, right? Right!?! 😅🤷

I love having the garden share a fenceline with the chicken run - the birds love getting some weeds to snack on!

Got a couple hanging petunia baskets. Maple the "dog" promptly came over to attempt to eat them. 🤦
