Bart Pals Poultry

Bart Pals Poultry Licensed poultry judge and poultry enthusiast from Iowa. Very excited to be running for APA Preside I attended the IPAs blood tester school when I was 14.

I was drawn to poultry at a very young age and continued my interest through 4-H. I actually won a national 4-H poultry trip to Chicago around 1975, sponsored by the Iowa Poultry Association. At that time ISU raised a particular quail and offered eggs to anyone interested, and of course I couldn't resist. My family has always been supportive. My wife Jody of 40 years, daughter Katie, son Logan and

his wife Cassie, son Sam and daughter Ella have all endured my love of poultry. I have raised all types of poultry, including commercial and purebred. Living in Mason City for the last 40 years I have settled in on raising bantams. I have been awarded the distinction "Master Exhibitor" by both the American Poultry Association and American Bantam Association. I served as Vice President of the American Poultry Association (Americas oldest livestock association). Currently I chair the Standard of Perfection, (purebred poultry book of recognized breeds and varieties), revision committee. Dr Darrell Trampel encouraged my involvement with the Iowa Poultry Association. He felt it was extremely important to have all aspects of poultry involved with making Iowa poultry move forward in the same direction. My goal regarding the Iowa Poultry Association was always to protect purebred poultry and stay out of the way of progress. It has been wonderful watching Iowa poultry, and the IPA, grow into what it has become today. With the current leadership it is clear it will continue to grow and prosper. Many State poultry associations admire the unity of Iowa poultry and the direction it continues to go. Thirty years ago, after a 5 year apprentice program with written and oral exams, I became a licensed judge for both the American Poultry Association and American Bantam Association. Poultry is the only livestock that has an actual licensing procedure for judging the species. I judge dozens of shows annually across North America. These include county fairs, state fairs, and national shows, all while trying to spread the message of why we can enjoy safe and very reasonably priced poultry products. Through the work of Iowa poultry producers America, and the world, can reap the rewards of Iowa inspiration, innovation, dedication, and overall HARD WORK. I look forward in helping the APA follow the same success through the hard work of all the members and their love of the American Poultry Association

As most of you know, I don't do lots of posting and it took me a while to gather enough strength to post this. About a month ago my wife Jody passed away of Non alcoholic liver cirrhosis. It actually made the Alzheimer's she was also suffering from secondary. Since diagnosed with liver cirrhosis March 1st she lost a pound a day till she passed. It's an awful disease!! Much of the stuff posted during the election and about the Revision was actually a distraction from what was going on here while fighting for Jody's life. Many knew Jody as she attended many of the shows with me. Her suffering is over! Thank you, again to everyone for your prayers and kind words! Bart

I reviewed live feed from APA General Meeting. Lots of issues to work out on audio and video of people speaking.

You did a great job fielding some heated questions. Seems strange that some posted comments that you made during the meeting that were misquoted. Guess they counted on no one viewing the live feed. Thanks for staying positive and not letting them bully you.

I first met Bart when he came to judge our fall show in 2010. As a young teen, still somewhat new to the realm of exhibition poultry and waterfowl, I took every opportunity to meet the judges and clerk with them for the day, and Bart was no different. Bart was outgoing and friendly, encouraged me to ask questions as we went up and down the aisles and through the classes. He was thorough in his explanation of breeds and why 1 was placed over 2, etc.

At the end of day he took the time to look at my birds with me in more detail; giving me his honest opinion whether it was what I wanted to hear or not, and gave some suggestions to consider for my breeders. At the end he thanked me for clerking with him. I'll admit I've had a number of judges do the same as Bart, but the difference was that I felt like an equal talking to Bart, and he was engaged in our conversations and genuinely wanted to help me.

The next time I met Bart was at the Boston Poultry Expo in 2018. Now, I'm quite sure Bart truly did not remember me but that did not matter! Bart talked to me like we were old friends. It doesn't matter who you are, Bart is approachable and if you want to talk chickens, that's all that matters!

When our club decided to submit a bid to host the Canadian National and won the bid, Bart encouraged and supported the event, and offered assistance as needed. It proved to me that Bart clearly cared about the Canadian members and that we weren't just forgot about like others have done in the past.

Bart's contributions to the hobby is a lengthy list that many people know better than myself. And even though he has been involved with the APA for longer than I've been alive, he is open to change, listens to everyone's concerns no matter who or where they're from and wants to continue to help our hobby grow and flourish!

Bart is genuine, honest, a fun-loving kind of guy, that is incredibly passionate about exhibition poultry and waterfowl. I could not imagine someone that would fill the position of APA president more perfectly. That's why I'll be voting for Bart Pals!

Whenever someone comes up and states that I had judged their birds someplace my first question is always "Was it a positive experience for you and your family?"

Too often judges get cocky, arrogant, ornery, or just plain stupid. This is the "moment" to connect but is too often missed.

This is our time to connect with people and make it a positive experience. Let's do that.

AFFECTING THE APA

Once again I would like to take a moment and explain the tremendous opportunities that the APA is working in currently.
The Murray McMurray flock certification, along with their advertising capabilities will enable the APA to advertise to hundreds of thousands of individuals who raise backyard poultry. From 4-H youth that buys chicks for his project, to the retiree who has always been interested, but never had the time to enjoy a backyard flock.
Our consultants are currently working with several companies who are interested in part entering with the APA which will not only provide additional income, but be a partner in expanding our reach across North America. This is an undertaking that has been in progress for over a year now, and our team, with the approval of the board, has spent countless hours making this a reality.
I ask we all remember this when posting comments on Facebook. Respect and honesty should always be at the forefront of everything we do on social media. These are exciting times that we all will benefit from.

Progress can be hard and change can be difficult. Compromise has got to be offered by both sides. One must consider the common end goal and the best effect possible on the membership.

There are a couple things I do know: we are all in it together and I know we can work anything out.

SUPPORTERS
It doesn't matter if it is a church board or President of The United States of America there will always be supporters and/or groups advocating for someone or something, and how nice those can be. There are also supporters or groups that don't reflect on the candidate correctly, sometimes intentionally.
Supporters should be taken at face value. The correlation between a particular candidate and a particular supporter should be investigated and given the appropriate amount of weight. Each member has an opinion and should be allowed to voice that opinion. But, the member should not impose that opinion as that of the candidate's. Nor should members consider that a coalition or even a relationship exists.
Drama is always something that draws attention but it can also misrepresent a candidate's view, opinions, ideas, or even character.
I am from Iowa, home of the "First in the Nation Primary", so we have candidates and groups coming through our state constantly. We have learned long ago, just because someone says something doesn't mean it is true. There is a reason we require "The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth". The truth has no agenda!

Bart's connection to the hatchery dates back to when Murray McMurray — the grandson of our founder — ran the company. To this day Bart is a champion for the industry, working to promote the standard and bridging the gaps between the different areas of the poultry world including shows, breeders, judges, and hatcheries.

A number of year ago Bart developed the video, "Chick to Champ." For years he and his wife were traveling to to 4-H meetings, teaching kids how to show birds. They developed the video in order to reach a wider audience of kids, and it was a huge success. We sold the video through our catalog — not only 4-H groups, but to many others who were interested in showing birds.

More recently, Bart was instrumental in starting the Master’s Cup Poultry Show, held annually in Webster City, IA. This show is truly unique. This premier event only accepts a limited number of entries and the quality of poultry shown at this event is outstanding. During this year's event, the national APA judge told me “it was like walking into winner’s row.” The event is also unique due to the atmosphere of friendship and comradery fostered by Bart and his committee.

This past year, Bart worked with our team at the hatchery as part of the APA Flock Certification Program. We have five breeds now listed as APA Certified, with more to come in the upcoming years. Through his efforts, and the committee's vision, we believe that this program will help the APA reach more poultry enthusiasts.
