Most people see a dairy goat in the show ring for a few minutes.
What they don’t see is everything that happens long before show day.
Preparing an Alpine dairy goat for an ADGA show takes weeks of work, not just a quick bath the night before.
🐐 Daily milking and udder care
🐐 Proper nutrition to support health, body condition, and milk production
🐐 Hoof trimming to ensure correct movement and soundness
🐐 Clipping and grooming to highlight dairy strength and breed character
🐐 Training young goats to lead calmly and stand correctly
🐐 Monitoring health, hydration, and overall condition
🐐 Washing equipment, packing supplies, and making sure paperwork is ready
Every show is an opportunity to evaluate the breeding decisions we’ve made and receive feedback from experienced judges. It helps us identify strengths, areas for improvement, and goals for future generations.
For me, showing goats is about much more than ribbons. It’s about preserving and improving the Alpine dairy breed, learning from fellow breeders, and celebrating the animals we’ve worked with every day.
The show ring may last only a few minutes, but it represents countless hours of dedication, care, and commitment.
