We captured a swarm in one of our yards last week. Not exactly what we want but it happens. Just glad we were able to get it since it was a big one. The swarm is at our house now and doing well. I really hope this is the last one for the year.

People see a jar of honey. We, as beekeepers, remember everything that came before it.

We remember winter. The silence of the hive. Every warm spell, every frost, and every gentle tap on the hive with the hope that there is still life inside.
We remember the first spring sunshine. The joy of seeing that the colony has survived. And the pain when you lift the lid and find only silence.

We remember the rain that kept the bees from flying. We remember the drought, when flowers bloomed but produced little or no nectar. We remember hail, storms, and strong winds that could wipe out the work of an entire season in just a few minutes.

But the hardest test is not time.
The heat is the hardest.
100 degrees. No shade. No wind. And you are wearing a bee suit — like wearing winter clothes in the middle of July.

Before you even open the first hive, sweat is already running into your eyes. By the third hive, your clothes are soaked through.

We remember the stings we stopped counting long ago. The heavy boxes we lift dozens of times a day. The pain in our backs and shoulders...

We see millions of flights. Millions of flowers visited one by one. Every bee that flew until complete exhaustion.

The next day, we open the hives again.
because you cannot be a beekeeper without loving bees more than your own comfort.

Respect the honey.

Because before it reached your table, someone gave a part of their life to the bees.
And tens of thousands of bees gave their entire lives for what is inside that jar.

Beekeeping isn't always easy, but watching bees thrive and producing local raw honey makes it worthwhile.

So next time you enjoy a spoonful of honey, take a moment to appreciate the extraordinary effort of the bees and the journey that brought it to your table.

Checking for laying queens in every hive we have over the next couple of days. We have several queen right nucs so we’ll use those to re-queen our honey production hives if we find any that are queenless. I’m sure there will be a few. It’s part of it. Queens get killed or superseded and sometimes the bees fail to make another one. 🍯
