I just love vending at the Salem, NH Farmers Market. The market today was shortened down from its normal 4 to 2 hours due to this weekend's nor'easter. Despite these conditions, customers of this great market showed up to show their support for all of us vendors in these tough conditions. Salem Farmers Market rocks!!!

Yesterday I drove out to Greenfield MA to pick up 50 cases of our new salsa. It was made from this year's tomatoes, onions and hot peppers. Marilyn says she likes it so I guess it's a winner. We plan on giving out some to CSA and selling the rest at the Salem Farmers Market and local businesses. Oh, and maybe giving out some at Christmas too?

Wendell Berry was a true inspiration for many farmers like me :-)

Today we remember Wendell Berry - a farmer, writer, poet – with deep gratitude for a life devoted to the land, farmers, and future generations.

From 1977 to 1980, Berry worked closely with our founder Bob Rodale, writing and editing for Rodale Press publications including Organic Gardening and Farming and The New Farm. He served as a trusted advisor and mentor to Bob.

Berry and the Rodale family shared a belief that remains at the heart of our work today: care for the soil, respect for farmers, strong communities, and a deeper understanding of our relationship with the land is a responsibility we all carry forward.

We are grateful that Wendell Berry’s legacy is woven into Rodale Institute's history, and for the generations of farmers, writers, and advocates his work will continue to inspire.

It has been another extremely busy year growing and selling our USDA certified organic produce. I was relieved recently to have finally harvested the last of our very prolific onion crop. We are also having other crops producing well this year despite a 3rd straight year in drought conditions. As always, there have been ups and downs again this year and as always, I am grateful to those folks, businesses and markets that have supported us in 2026 thus far.

We are extremely grateful and happy to now be vending at the Salem Farmers Market each Sunday from 10-2. Yesterday was our 4th week attending and we look forward to the rest of this season and beyond 😊

Our garlic plot is looking pretty strong so far this year and we have already begun harvesting and distributing the scapes 😀

We spent today in emergency mode as tomorrow's just recently announced forecast of cold, wind and rain ( snow for some it seems ) forced us to spend a large part of the day covering up as best we could our most frost sensitive plants that have already made their way into our field. In 17 years of farming I have never experienced this situation. Hopefully our efforts to keep the wind and cold off of our tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash and potatoes will prove worthwhile. It was all done in order to potentially save our season from yet another climatic disaster. Pictured here is the longest row cover I have ever cut and put over our already transplanted tomatoes. Several more were cut and put over 6 more plots today. It was a bitch for sure and diverted us from other essential and time critical work. Does anyone out there still believe that climate chaos is some sort of Chinese hoax? If so, then I would dare say that they are probably not farmers and that's the kindest remark I can make with regards to their beliefs. Hopefully we will get through this relatively unscathed.

Our 2026 CSA began yesterday and members received lots of freshly harvested organic greens in each of their shares. We are working every day now in order to ensure ( as best we can ) a nice supply of produce grown in the soil over the next several months for all of those folks who support us.

Early April in Mason and the garlic in this plot is growing more each day now. We have begun planting out the field for yet another growing season. The 3 tunnels are pretty much full now and we should start passing out CSA shares in 3-4 weeks. We hope to be able to have another productive year at Hungry Bear Farm :-)
