Harper’s Barber Shop, owned by Gwynn’s Island residents Danny and Tracy Harper, opened recently at 182 Main Street in Mathews, offering haircuts, skin fades, high and tights, beard trims, and traditional hot towel shaves.

The two-chair shop is decorated in a Chesapeake Bay/Mathews theme, with local art and photos featuring boats and watermen and scenes of Mathews from the past. One wall is covered in siding from an old barn from down in Susan, while another holds hand-crafted wooden U.S. flags representing each branch of military service, plus police officers and first responders. A circa 1905 barber’s chair that belonged to Phyllis Buchanan’s father, Kearney Davis, sits in the same corner of the building where Buchanan sat for years while working for Mathews Insurance Agency.

Tracy Harper said she became licensed as a barber and cosmetology instructor 14 years ago when her now-adult children were in school in the family’s former home of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Before that, with a BFA in dance education from the University of Performing Arts in Philadelphia, she performed as a dancer, taught dance, and worked as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor.

At the end of Milby Farm Road in Shacklefords you find Milby Farm, a spread of 300 acres. It’s a place you don’t want to miss when visitation is open.

Michael Gross, a retired veterinarian of Yorktown, bought this property about six years ago. Today he and Melanie Storrs are running the farm together.

Come see the good folks of the Farmers and Fishermans Cooperative at The Hatchery located on Gwynns Island this Friday 4PM - Sundown. It is an opportunity to meet some locals who are working hard to bring Mathews, and surrounding counties, some delicious, nutritious, locally grown produce and seafood (among other things).

There will be a small amount of goods offered (no fresh seafood except at the Hatchery's foodtruck) but this is more of an opening to familiarize you with some local producers and ask lots of questions about our plans for the future. 😉

You will be seeing much more of the Farmers and Fishermans Cooperative going forward. Keep an 👁 and👂out! ✌️❤️😁 Mush Love!!!

Lions Mane mushrooms are known to have many health benefits when consumed on a regular basis. It has potent anti-inflammatory compounds, shows promise in protecting against neurodegenerative diseases, and can even have anti-depressant effects just to name a FEW!

The fact that this photo that I took of a young lions mane mushroom resembles our brain so much certainly has me feeling confident about these health benefits!
