What Are We Doing Wednesday 🎣💛

This week… we’re fishing.

The other weekend we had a friend over and he really wanted to go fishing. It was a Sunday, baseball ended early, and for once we had no plans. I mentioned it to John and we both kind of looked at each other and said… “Why not?!”

We’ve taken the boys fishing before, but honestly it had been years. John and I have both fished here and there over the years too, but it had been a long time for us as well.

Fishing brings back so many memories for me, especially memories of my Grandpa Clinard teaching me to fish while we camped as kids. I still remember one trip where my brother and I caught a bunch of sunfish. Later that night we heard what sounded like raindrops hitting the camper roof… only to discover a raccoon had gotten into our fish pile and the “rain” was fish bones dropping onto the roof 🤣

Fishing feels peaceful to me (mostly 😂). It’s patience. It’s mindfulness. It’s slowing down long enough to sit beside your kids and just be. And honestly, whether we catch anything or not, it still feels like time well spent. 💛

Any guesses? 😂 Who can explain this picture?

What you don’t see is the fresh made coffee sitting in the cup getting cold ☕️, the latest RHWORI episode paused halfway through, and the somewhat warm laundry still sitting in the dryer waiting to be folded.

3 out of 5 people in our house take medication for ADHD. On work and school days we’re pretty consistent with it, but weekends are a little more flexible. I often don’t take mine until later on weekends, mostly because our weekends look different and there’s less structure to the mornings.

Today baseball got rescheduled, so we lounged around for a while. Eventually I made breakfast and sat down to watch one of my shows. I paused it to make coffee… but the coffee pot needed water. So I walked to the sink, looked outside, saw the chickens, and thought, “I should probably feed them real quick.”

So I started the coffee, walked outside, fed the chickens, talked to them for a bit (because obviously....they are seriously some of my favorite creatures 🐓😂), admired them, and then on my way back in noticed the landscaping project I started yesterday.

Specifically the bush along the front sidewalk that I was already second guessing because the placement just wasn’t right for the size it’ll eventually become. But hey it rained all night, the ground was soft, and clearly this was the perfect time to move it. 🤷‍♀️

So with two eggs in hand, I set them down, grabbed a shovel, and moved the bush. Then I decided I should also intentionally place the lilies I removed yesterday because mismatched, random landscaping absolutely grinds my gears. They’re not planted yet… but at least they’re organized. 😂

Somewhere in the middle of all of this, I remembered my coffee was probably cold. I laughed at myself, grabbed the eggs I had originally collected, and finally walked back inside to drink my lukewarm coffee.

I’m pretty sure iced coffee was invented by a mom with ADHD. ☕️😂

Now back to my coffee and RHWORI I go 😉

Anyone else’s brain work like this sometimes?

Happy Saturday friends 💛

WHAT THE FLOCK FRIDAY 🐓💛

Meet the newest member of Hogues Haven… our Jubilee Orpington rooster!

We think his name might be Julius… but we’re open to suggestions 🤔

We’ve been slowly curating our flock since moving into our new house, and somehow we ended up with ALL hens and no rooster.

A friend posted this sweet guy and we instantly knew he would make the perfect addition to our little homestead crew.

When I told the boys we were getting a rooster, in the words of my Gen Alpha children, my middle son said:
“BROOO… he’s gonna be getting all the huz. I mean… little bro be getting all the ladies.”

Heaven help me 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

A few fun facts about Jubilee Orpingtons:
🐓 Known for being calm, friendly, and affectionate
🐓 Often called the “gentle giants” of the chicken world
🐓 Their beautiful mahogany feathers with white speckles get prettier as they mature
🐓 Great flock protectors without being overly aggressive
🐓 Excellent with kids and beginner chicken keepers
🐓 Big fluffy birds with even bigger personalities
And despite their reputation, roosters actually do a lot more than crow at 5am 😅
They help keep order in the flock, watch for predators, find snacks for the hens, and honestly… can be pretty entertaining to watch.

We’re excited to see how this handsome little guy fits into life here at Hogues Haven 💛

🐣✨ What Are We Doing Wednesday ✨🐣

This week at Hogues Haven… we’re hatching chickens! 💛🐥

When we added our sweet silkie girls from Rosie Acres Farm to our flock, one of the girls was VERY broody 🪺✨ So we grabbed a small clutch of eggs for her to sit on.

Moving to a new home apparently changed her mind 😂💁‍♀️ and broke the broodiness… so into the incubator the eggs went!

Fast forward 21 days later and we officially welcomed THREE little chicks to Hogues Haven 🐥🐥🐥

We think we ended up with: 💚 Two Easter Eggers
🤍 One Silkie

The boys helped name them: 🍗 KFC
🍗 Tender
🥚 Yolk

It was such a fun experience getting to do this together as a family 💛 Watching the eggs hatch never gets old… equal parts exciting, stressful, magical, and slightly sleep depriving 😅

Cade’s class recently did a chicken hatch at school, so he became our resident hatch expert and incubator supervisor 🧑‍🌾🐣😂

Now we wait to see what colors, fluff, and personalities these little babies grow into ✨

Anyone else hatching chicks this spring?! 🐥👇

🐓 WHAT THE FLOCK FRIDAY 🐓

Meet Honey 🍯💛

This week’s featured flock member appears to be a Golden Laced Wyandotte 😍✨

Golden Laced Wyandottes are known for:
✨ Stunning black-and-gold feather “lacing”
❄️ Being cold hardy — perfect for Michigan winters
🥚 Reliable brown egg layers
🐓 Calm, friendly personalities
👑 Their beautiful rose combs that help prevent frostbite

One of my favorite things about this breed is how every feather looks hand painted 🎨 Nature really showed off with this one.

Honey has quickly become one of the prettiest girls in the flock and definitely carries herself like she knows it 😂🐔

Do your chickens have personalities as big as their looks too?! 👇

🌱✨ What Are We Doing Wednesday ✨🌱
Around here at Hogues Haven… we’re gardening! 💛🌿

We spent most of the weekend outside getting our hands dirty and planting this year’s gardens. Some parts didn’t exactly go as planned 😅🌧️ Between the chilly Michigan weather and negotiating screen time for garden time with the kids 📱➡️🌱… it was definitely a real-life parenting moment.

But we got it done 💪

Cade and Degan tackled the big garden and planted:
🎃 Pumpkins
🍉 Melons
🌱 Squash

While Eli and I worked on the raised beds planting:
🧅 Onions
🥬 Lettuce
🥒 Cucumbers
🫛 Green beans
🌶️ Peppers
🍅 Tomatoes
even beets ❤️ one of John and Eli's favorites!

Most of what we planted came from seed, so now comes the hardest part… the waiting ⏳🌱 Thankfully our larger plants have survived these last couple of chilly Michigan days 🤞☀️

Gardening always feels like such a reminder of life itself. You do the work, nurture what you can, trust the process and hope something beautiful grows from it 💛

One of my favorite wall hangings says:
✨ “Keep planting and sowing, beautiful things take time.” ✨

And honestly I think that applies to so much more than gardens 🌿💛

What are you planting this season? 🌱👇

✨ What the Flock Friday ✨

Meet Tawney 🤎🐓

This fluffy little woodland girl has officially stolen our hearts here at Hogues Haven 💛

After lots of chicken research and flock opinions, we’re leaning toward Tawney being an Easter Egger mix with her fluffy cheeks and beard, feathered feet and unique coloring make us think she’s likely a fun little barnyard mix with some extra fancy genetics mixed in 😂

A few fun Easter Egger facts:
🥚 They often lay blue, green, or olive-colored eggs
🐣 No two Easter Eggers look exactly alike
🐣 They’re known for sweet, curious personalities
🐣 Their fluffy “cheeks” are called muffs/beards
🐣 Mixed Easter Eggers are often some of the prettiest birds in the flock!

Now we wait to see what color eggs Tawney surprises us with someday!

A good reminder today that sometimes the best things just need a little TLC 💛

We have some landscaping at the new house that definitely needs some love and a few weeks ago I almost pulled these plants out before realizing they were peonies. I’m SO glad I didn’t. 🌸

Every time I see a peony, I’m reminded of my grandfather and his house on Seminole.
Their backyard, right in the middle of the city, somehow felt like a little garden paradise to me as a child. Beautiful flowers, rows of fresh veggies and raspberries, warm sunshine, and endless imagination.

I can still remember wandering around the garden, laying in the grass on a warm sunny day and going on little adventures in my head for hours. Funny how certain flowers can instantly transport you back to a feeling, a place, a person.

That's one thing I love about gardening, nature, a little dirt therapy, It’s never really just about the plants 🌿 its so much more 💛

It’s What Are We Wednesday… and this week, we’re at the ball fields 4 out of 5 nights! ⚾️

Weeks like this make me extra thankful for Home Chef. I’ve tried most of the meal delivery companies, and I always end up circling back to Home Chef.

Let’s be honest… will my kids still end up at the concession stand spending their allowance money? 💰 Absolutely. 💯

But I can have a little peace of mind knowing they also had a well-balanced dinner, even on the busiest nights.

Not already using Home Chef? You can get a discount on your first set of meals with my link in the comments! 💛

✨ Vintage sale Saturday was a success! Great finds + even better people and raised $62 dollars to donate towards a local cat rescue!

🌱 Sunday reset = sunshine, strawberries planted and takeling and invasive wild rose and overgrown old Lavender.

Gardening takes vision… but it’s therapy to my soul 💛 dirty hands, hard work, and fresh air 🌞
