U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the agency will keep the current National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), which set nationwide limits for these “forever chemicals” in drinking water. The agency aims to provide additional time for compliance to ensure water systems are able to meet their PFAS remediation goals, with a proposed rule expected in fall 2025. The EPA also intends to establish a federal exemption framework and enhance outreach to rural and small community water systems through their new PFAS Outreach Initiative (PFAS OUT).
