Photo Story | Hoefling Farm  “Our farm was bought by the Hoefling family in the early 1900’s. My husband and I are the third generation of Hoefling’s to live here. Through good times and bad times it was a great place to call home. We have raised 9 children and have made many improvements to the building site. We are hoping to pass it off to our children and let them also have the pleasure of building their own memories.”

Do you remember our recent archive acquisition, the historic Lockwood, Kessler & Bartlett Aerial Photography Collection?

This addition has been making itself at home in our archive storage as we begin the exciting work of “cracking open” each canister and digitizing.

Since the collection totals 1,600 canisters and roughly 500,000 frames (across Long Island, New York, New England, and Puerto Rico), it’ll be a bit of a process…but don’t worry, we’re bringing you along for the journey 🧳!

📸 Photo Story | Malz Farm

“The Malz farm has been in our family over 125 years. My brother still lives there. My grandfather and father both made a living for their families here. I grew up there and have fond memories of when it looked like this in the 60s.

I still have the scar from when I knocked corn down for my dad in the wire corn crib and as I was sliding through the doorway, I got a scratch on my side from the metal frame. I completed many chores and rode my bike for miles around that yard. It’s wonderful to see it again as it was then.”

✈️ While soaring through the air, pilots/photographers needed to keep meticulous records of where they’d been, what they’d photographed, weather conditions and more! Talk about multi-tasking!

These flight cards are an incredible physical example of the time and talent required to capture the photos in our collection!

Thanks to cecilcountyhistory.com for sharing this great Vintage Aerial find on their FB account! This is a beautiful shot of a 1960s Atlantic Station. These filling stations were known for friendly, personal service with attendants pumping gas, cleaning windshields, checking oil levels and inspecting tire pressure for free! This particular station in Cecil County is noted to have been directly across the street from a local Cree-Mee Freez ice cream shop that can be seen in the lower right corner🍦.

⛽ A great 1963 commercial for Atlantic Station was found and posted by the YouTube account, OsbornTramain and we’ve supplied that link in our bio. The commercial is a great example of 1960s advertising and we know you’ll be sure to enjoy as much as we did!

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be participating in the Lucas County Public Library Genealogy and Local History Fair! Stop by our booth as we offer guided, on-site searches of our collection and answer any questions you may have about vintage aerial photography!

In addition to the programs below, personalized genealogy assistance sessions will be offered in 15-minute increments in Meeting Rooms 3 and 4 during the Genealogy and Local History Fair between 12:30 and 1:45 p.m. First come/first served.

What else could a boy need? What an interesting glimpse into rural life from a child’s perspective!

“Our farm was in Sperry, Adair County, MO. Sperry consisted of our house, my grandparents house, two neighbors, the one room school I attended (complete with outhouses), the general store my grandfather owned, and the Baptist Church, all clustered around a crossroads. What else could a boy need in the late 1950s? My parents moved there in 1951 and lived there until my fathers death in 2000.” [Shelby County, Indiana]

Most of our collection has come from rolls of film. We’ve created processes and adapted technology to help us digitize them…BUT an estimated 2 million of our over 20 million photo collection is even more tricky, as they have come to us as INDIVIDUAL negatives 😳.

Sometimes they’re neatly in a book like those pictured here, and other times they’re simply manilla envelopes full of single negatives.

Digitizing them is often more labor intensive, but always worth it!

Over the years, thousands of our users have discovered photos in our library that are a part of their family story. As stewards of this historic collection, it’s our privilege to share these stories with you.

Kicking off our story series are words from Elda Stone of Lake County, Illinois:

“My parents, Richard and Gertrude Rost, bought this house and 10 acres on Kelsey Road, Barrington, IL, around 1944 and raised three children there. The area around us was mostly farms for many years. They bought a horse for my brother, and we had various other critters. My dad drove many commuting hours to work in Chicago, and it wasn’t until later in life that I realized what a sacrifice he made in order to choose this kind of idyllic country lifestyle for us all. Our mother died in 1983 and Dad sold the property in the 1990s. Both are gone now, much has changed in the neighborhood, but the house still stands now in 2014.”
