Dexter cattle, known for their small size and hardy nature, exhibit fascinating genetic variations.
The American Dexter Cattle Association celebrates the incredible diversity within the Dexter breed. We believe that all Dexters are valuable and contribute to the richness and strength of our breed. Let's explore and appreciate the variations that make Dexters so special.
A Rainbow of Colors: Red, Black, and Dun! From the rich, deep black to the warm, earthy red and the unique, soft dun, Dexters display a beautiful range of colors. Each hue adds to the breed's visual appeal, making them a delight to behold.
Dexters can be either horned or polled (naturally hornless). The presence or absence of horns does not diminish the value or quality of the animal. Both horned and polled Dexters have their own advantages and appeal to different breeders and owners. The ADCA supports both horned and polled animals and encourages breeders to select for the traits that best suit their needs and preferences.
Dexters may carry the chondrodysplasia gene (chondro) or not. Both chondro and non-chondro Dexters have unique characteristics and are equally desirable. Whether you prefer the shorter legs of a chondro Dexter or the longer legs of a non-chondro, both types contribute positively to the breed and offer distinct advantages for different farming needs and preferences. There is no preference for one over the other, and both are equally accepted into the American Dexter Cattle Association.
Dexters, like other cattle breeds, can produce milk with different beta-casein protein variants, most notably A2 and A1. Both A2 and A1 milk are nutritious and beneficial. Some people find A2 milk easier to digest, while others have no issues with A1 milk. The ADCA does not favor one milk type over the other. Whether your Dexter produces A2 or A1 milk, it is a valuable source of nutrition and a testament to the breed's versatility.
The American Dexter Cattle Association embraces and celebrates the diversity of the Dexter breed. We believe that all Dexters, regardless of their characteristics, are valuable and deserving of our appreciation. Let's continue to promote and protect the breed's diversity for generations to come. We love them all!
Thank you for supporting the American Dexter Cattle Association and the Dexter breed!
