Cultivated Kids Society ~July~

We started out this record heat wave with some berry picking at Engleberries Farm Madison owns and operates a regenerative no spray berry farm in Rural Hall and you can find her berries exclusively on our weekly ordering website. Our Food Club families and Kids Society families will enjoy private picking sessions this year and leave with full hearts and bellies. Madison not only has a little pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, she’s also just a really kind human and easy to talk to. If you haven’t snagged any berries yet this year, they’ll be available again the week of 7/12. Order by 7/10!

Cheesecloth 101

I get questions about cheesecloths any time I’m sharing about making cheese. So I’ll just toss out my best advice based on many hours of experience.

🧀 Don’t buy a “cheesecloth.” The package has it labeled this way. They’re overpriced and very fragile. My favorite cheesecloths are cotton tea towels from a big box store. Better when they’re sold in a multipack. You can’t have enough.

🧀 Wash mindfully. This rule goes for any fabric that touches dairy. Whether it be reusable milk filters or cheesecloths. Never wash them with other fabrics because your t-shirts will smell like fermented milk. Simply toss them alone in the washing machine with some unscented detergent and vinegar.

🧀 For cheese cloths and milk filters that need an extra cleaning boost: sometimes you can only wash a fabric so many times before the build up becomes noticeable. This is when I boil them for a few minutes, then let them dry and sanitize in the sunshine. This step really helps keep the cloth fresh, keeps my dairy products clean, and ensures longevity of my cloths and filters.

Raw milk and cheese making can be so fun and delicious. Give yourself a leg up in success by making sure you’re using the highest quality milk and cleanest products.

Food Club Farm Tour - Sunset Market Gardens

With over 10 years of farming, David and his family really know exactly what they’re doing and how they can best serve their community. We are thankful that they chose to serve our small Food Club co-op.

Their farm store hours are Wednesday 4-6pm and Saturday 9-12. is a must see!

The ferocious “barn cat.”

He found us at barely a weaning age, covered in ticks, weighing in at just ounces.

He’s moved with us and become so loyal. A mouse or mole here and there. A squirrel on my front porch with such pride. Snuggles on the couch every night and front porch naps on these cloudy, rainy days.

He’s the quintessential cat and fits right in around here. You’ll almost never see him unless you come around often, but that’s the way he likes it. Predictable with a splash of sneaky (anyone remember the time he treed himself for 5 days?!).

Cultivated Kids Society - May

We went for a hike this month in the chilly, rainy weather and let me tell you what happened…

There is something special about getting rained on during a season of drought. It’s like God knew these humans needed to be watered just like the forest surrounding us. Just pure magic from the heavens above ✨

The kids found waterfalls, rocks, sticks, flowers, sand, tadpoles, rivers, and so much more. How special it is to witness the wonder of the world through a child’s eyes.

Meet Walter.

A beef cross out of our Jersey cow. Her second calf. Such strong Mothering instincts.

Walter just needed some pep in his step, but once he got it, he’s been adventurous and so sweet. His dark brindle coloring catches your eye and his leaps of joy will make you melt.

Our first calf on the farm is a big deal and we are thankful for mentors who made this process as smooth as possible. My biggest piece of advice in farming is, “GET A MENTOR.” Pay them. Work for free. The confidence, skills, and self sufficiency gained is worth every dollar and sweat poured out.

Introducing ✨Gosie + Gertie✨

We hatched 2 Cotton Patch Geese from our sweet duo, Joe + Nellie.

CPG are a critically endangered, American landrace breed that are known for their temperament, smaller stature, and excellent parenting abilities. They are also great foragers, making them a sustainable goose to have on a small homestead.

These geese are autosexing and this darker color means these goslings are little ladies. 🎀

These ladies will head to new homes and we will reset the incubator for more opportunities for other families to own *in my opinion* one of the most enjoyable animal on the homestead.

Impact + Rest = Healing

We’ve been experimenting with silvopasture in some areas, and the girls aren’t sad about it right now.

There is a lot of work to be done to help this sad soil that we purchased a year and a half ago. It’s going to take time, but allowing brief impact with lots of rest is already regenerating the seed bank. We then focus on carbon/nitrogen inputs (usually in the form of 💩 + hay/wood chips).

It’s in drought conditions like now where you’ll see the biggest benefit of rich, fertile, alive soil. Things still grow with weeks of no rain. It’s a serious make or break.

We prioritize the sourcing of food from farmers who prioritize the life of soil. It’s the ultimate flex in an uncertain world.

*yes, these girls need to eat. that’s why they just got released on this spot of pasture*
