Done with cucumbers 🥒 for the year…
Plants still in the garden are slowing down in the heat, and not coming to a full ripened state due to cross pollination with watermelon & cantaloupe. The melon plants mature slower, and tend to take over the cucumber plants later in the season. If you begin to see a very short stubby baseball sized round cucumber that won’t ripen - you have cucamelons…. 😆
***Even though these aren’t any good to eat, don’t throw them away. Pick them, and put them in the freezer- toss a few out to your chickens wherever they are seeking shade in the heat of the day. It’ll be a cold snack for them & the sub par produce didn’t go to waste.

Was able to make two harvests of green beans this year, and slowly getting some chow built up in the pantry.
This year I’m doing things a little different. On the second run, I removed half of the rows and will let these remaining plants run their life cycle, dry down and go to seed. From there I will shell these pods, ensure the seeds are completely dry and then store them in maybe a ziplock bag or maybe vacuum seal them?…… More to follow on that, but I’ll shell out a few I’ve already collected first and see if they are even viable for replanting.
I remember my grandma doing this, to her it was a matter of self reliance, frugality, and just another spoke in the wheel to feeding the family.
Lessons learned being raised by those who lived through the Great Depression are proving more and more valuable.

The garden got off to a sketchy start this year but has came back around nice so far. Have a beehive like 10’ away from it so these girls keep everything pollinated and boost crop yield significantly.

Working through some colonies in the nursery apiary. In the second pic you can tell this young queen has strong pheromone content, she is secured in a clip and the attendant bees form a protective cluster around her.
*Similar to when a hillbilly is smashing the record on skee-ball w/3k tickets at your local Chucky Cheese, and fellow ruthless toothless start forming a cluster around this magnificent specimen of underhanded accuracy.

Could really use a few moments of your time, and shoot up a prayer for Garrett to recover and begin healing from injuries sustained in an accident.
Today, tomorrow, and however long it takes.
It truly does pain us all when we see our youngsters in a bad way, around here family ties and friendships transcend generations.
Again, please take a few minutes for this humble, solid young man.

Second harvest of Dad’s Spicy Dirt Apples… Radishes are considered a cold weather crop, generally 22-30days to harvest. The taste or “hotness” will increase as the average ambient temperature increases during their growing period.
I.E. Radishes in March aren’t as hot as radishes grown in June.
Even if you don’t like them they are a good plant to have around as they produce their own nitrogen and enrich the soil.
Many farmers in northern states plant entire fields just for this reason, don’t even harvest them and till them under because of their rapid maturity & nitrogen replenishment benefits.

Scooping up another spring swarm from a weeping willow tree. Had a chat with these girls and they seemed to approve of the new NUC casa.
They won’t be charged rent this entire season, and half of next year.
When capturing a feral swarm the beekeeper is committing to raising, providing shelter, monitoring the colony’s health and even back feeding them during the dearth and into late fall before “wintering over”.
So you’re into it for about 18 months / 1 1/2yrs before you’ll see any return in revenue from honey. *and this is if - IF the colony survives the first winter, disease, colony collapse disorder, or pest infestation.
