Keeping chickens comes with alot of ups & downs. You have to learn how to harden your heart a little. They aren't like a cat or dog; not to say you can't love them the same. But nine times out of ten you will find them in compromising situations and about 85% of the outcome usually results in death (not statistically proven. Just me giving a little % to survival). Just this past week alone (in a 3 day time frame) I found 2 pullets stuck in tight spots where they couldn't get out on their own. Both of which could not walk immediately after. One was a black Ameraucana pullet stuck in between a brooder box and another box in the building. She is still healing but is up and walking better. The second, hold on for this one...just why, a maran/wyandotte mix managed to get out of her pen (10x10x6) and get stuck between it and the next pen (10x20x6). Jammed literally between 4 layers of wire. 🤦‍♀️Then I had a Black Laced Red Wyandotte get out of the same 10x10x6 pen but somehow had success getting over in the neighboring pen where she was scalped by the chickens in that pen. She is still alive for now in a box in the house. They really got her down good. I can literally see her skull. The only thing I can think happened was the two hens were flying up either because they got scared or was being stupid and wanted to try and roost higher on what I have no clue. There is a top on both pens but the sides of said pens where they touch obviously have holes...somewhere.
Chicken death can be a sudden occurrence that no one can control. It's just best practice to be prepared in case you have to help them heal.

Here are some wyandotte pullets, wyandotte/maran pullets, and wyandotte/olive egger rooster I hatched this year. Rooster is looking for his forever coop. He hatched out of a green egg and I was hoping he would have been a she. But can't have it all 😆

These Wyandottes are turning out very nicely! I've got to pull the three females out soon. The splash rooster ended up with a broken leg somehow but it is healed now. Regardless he is not a bird I am retaining therefore his time here on the farm is coming to an end shortly. The other boys will be here until spring at the latest.

* Pay no mind to the feeder and water bowl. Took this before cleaning and refilling water and feeder. I have a rooster who stands in the bowl to drink. Might be a problem this winter. Sometimes you have to do things in the moment.*

Mealworm sifting day! We decided to get back into raising mealworms this summer. We have both dark and yellow mealworms. I am planning on getting back into superworms as well.
