Every Great Story Begins Somewhere. Ours Began With a Cabernet Franc.

A mutual love for Cabernet Franc was the beginning of RC W**e Merchants. Sure, it could have been any other grape. But in true Rick & Chal fashion, it started with a conversation about the elegance of a varietal that, in our opinion, has never received the appreciation it deserves.

A few days later, over a bottle of w**e, it became apparent that we were two peas in a pod. Our mutual respect for w**e education, our fascination with history, and our understanding that everything worthwhile evolves made one thing clear: we were meant to create something memorable.

The journey hasn’t always been easy. We’ve taken our hits, picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off, and continued moving forward. Through it all, our vision has remained the same: to find that one extraordinary w**e that speaks to you on a personal level. A w**e that doesn’t need to shout to be remembered. A w**e with a story, a soul, and a place at your table.

We are Rick & Chal, the founders of RC W**e Merchants.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll be putting the finishing touches on every element of who we are and what we stand for. Soon, we’ll be inviting you to experience what we believe will be South Texas’ premier boutique w**e shop. A place where discovery is at the heart of everything we do.

Imagine discovering an exceptional Cabernet Franc, or a w**e from a small production w**ery that produces just 860 bottles, a rare find that will absolutely take your breath away. These are the w**es we search for. These are the stories we want to share. And this is only the beginning.

To our friends, family, and everyone who has been part of our journey, thank you for being here and being patient with us. We’re building something special, and we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors.

RC W**e Merchants.
Good w**e. Great discoveries. Unforgettable experiences.

THE STORY OF CHAL ETUA

Chal Etua began his journey when “Hooked on a Feeling” was topping the charts. Rumor has it that his baby bottle may have even contained a little 1959 Château Pétrus. While we can’t confirm that story, we can confirm that w**e would eventually become a very important part of his life.

His family moved to the United States from Cameroon so his father could continue his education. Born in Lansing, Michigan, Chal’s own journey eventually took him to Ole Miss, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Hotel Management. From there, he spent time at Massanutten Resort, beginning what would become a career in the Food & Beverage industry.

A temporary move to South Texas eventually became permanent. Chal worked his way through the restaurant industry in McAllen, learning the business from the ground up. Then, one simple conversation about Cabernet Franc changed the direction of his life.

That conversation sparked a deeper curiosity about w**e—and a desire to understand what was inside the bottle, not simply what was printed on the label. Chal continued his education through the W**e & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), earning his Level I certification and currently working toward Level II.

Then came an afternoon of conversation with Rick Ramos this was the beginning of RC W**e Merchants. The original mission was simple: find some of the world’s greatest w**es and make them accessible at an affordable price.

But the more we searched, the more we realized that the real opportunity wasn’t necessarily in the w**es everyone already knew. It was in the bottles nobody was looking for. The small producers.
The hidden gems. The w**eries making w**e because of passion, not production numbers.

The vineyards producing only a few hundred cases. The w**ery with one exceptional bottling that may never become a household name. That is what defines RC W**e Merchants.

Finding w**es that tell a story, w**es with character, authenticity, and a sense of place. We believe some of the most exciting w**es in the world have yet to be discovered. We are on that mission.

PASO ROBLES W**E COUNTRY — A HISTORY OF BOLD W**ES

Paso Robles’ w**e story dates back to 1797, when Spanish missionaries established Mission San Miguel Arcángel and introduced the first grapevines to the region.

The modern w**e industry began in 1882, when Andrew York planted commercial vineyards and helped establish Zinfandel as one of Paso Robles’ heritage grapes. In the 1920s, famed Polish pianist and statesman Ignace Paderewskiplanted Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, bringing national attention to Paso’s w**es.

The real transformation came in the 1960s and ’70s, when pioneers began planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Rhône varieties. Today, Paso Robles is home to more than 200 w**eries and approximately 40,000 vineyard acres, producing everything from powerful Cabernet and Zinfandel to Syrah and Rhône-style blends.

RC W**e Merchants the journey for small-production w**es begins with Rick & Chal searching high and low for those special bottles worth discovering, sharing, and remembering.

OREGON W**E COUNTRY

Oregon’s w**e story began in the 1800s, but the modern industry took shape in the 1960s, when pioneering w**emakers planted vines in the Willamette Valley and believed Oregon’s cool climate could produce world-class Pinot Noir.

In 1965, David Lett planted Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley, joining pioneers like Charles Coury and Dick Erath. Their vision helped transform Oregon into one of America’s premier cool-climate w**e regions. By the late 1970s, Oregon w**es were earning international recognition, proving the pioneers had been right.

Today, Pinot Noir is Oregon’s signature grape, but the state also produces exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Syrah and more. From the Willamette Valley to Southern Oregon, each region brings its own character, climate and terroir.

Oregon — where vision, perseverance and terroir created something extraordinary.

RC W**e Merchants dedicated in finding the diamond in the rough. In Oregon we find America’s Pinot Noir and its Pioneers and the gems they created.

WASHINGTON W**E COUNTRY

A HISTORY OF DISCOVERY & EXCELLENCE, Washington State may be a relatively young w**e region, but its roots go back nearly 200 years. The first recorded grapevines were planted at Fort Vancouver in 1825 by the Hudson’s Bay Company. W**egrowing later took hold in areas such as Walla Walla and the Yakima Valley, but the development of irrigation and a better understanding of Washington’s unique climate truly opened the door to its modern w**e industry.

The real transformation began in the 1950s and 1960s, led in large part by Dr. Walter Clore, often called the Father of Washington W**e. His extensive research helped determine which grape varieties could thrive in Eastern Washington. Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Merlot soon became important parts of the state’s w**e story.

Then came the 1970s — the decade that changed everything. Large commercial vineyards were planted, including Sagemoor and Cold Creek, while new vineyards emerged in Walla Walla, Red Mountain and other regions.

By 1983, Yakima Valley became Washington’s first federally recognized AVA, followed by Walla Walla Valley and Columbia Valley in 1984. Today, Washington is home to more than 1,000 w**eries and dozens of grape varieties, with regions such as Walla Walla, Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills and the Yakima Valley producing w**es recognized around the world.

Washington W**e is no longer an emerging story — it is an American w**e success story.

YOUR VOTE COUNTS. YOUR VOICE MATTERS.

Last night, this was one of the topics discussed at “Your Vote Matters,” hosted by the John Lewis Voter Coalition of Hidalgo County. It raised an important question about elections, voter confidence, and election integrity.

We hear a lot of claims about election fraud and the need for election integrity. We also hear increasingly heated language suggesting that questioning certain claims makes someone a “communist” or “socialist.” But shouldn’t we be able to ask questions without attacking one another?

Here is my simple question: If widespread election fraud were determining election outcomes, how do we explain Republicans winning the White House, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House?

That doesn’t mean election administration should never be questioned. Quite the opposite. Election integrity should mean transparency, accountability, accurate voter rolls, secure voting systems, and confidence that every legally cast vote is counted.

And here is an important fact about Hidalgo County 2026

According to the March 2026 voter-registration report:

• 451,612 registered voters
• 18,752 voters listed as “Suspense”
• 432,860 not on the Suspense List
• Approximately 4.15% were listed as Suspense

But let’s be clear: being on the Texas Suspense List does NOT mean someone’s vote is suspended, fraudulent, or that they cannot vote. It generally means the voter-registration record needs to be confirmed or updated. Suspense voters remain registered voters and have a process for voting.

That distinction matters.

We can believe in election integrity AND the right to vote.

We can ask tough questions WITHOUT calling our neighbors communists or socialists.

We can demand accountability WITHOUT automatically assuming fraud.

And we can disagree politically while still agreeing on one fundamental principle:

EVERY LEGALLY CAST VOTE MATTERS.

Don’t let political rhetoric discourage you from participating.

Register. Learn the facts. Ask questions. Vote.

Uruguay’s w**e story began in the second half of the 19th century, when European immigrants brought viticulture traditions to the country. By the 1870s, pioneers Francisco Vidiella and Pascual Harriague were establishing vineyards and experimenting with varieties that could thrive in Uruguay’s climate.

The grape that would ultimately define Uruguay was Tannat. Pascual Harriague successfully planted the variety in Salto in the 1870s, where it adapted remarkably well to Uruguay’s soils and humid, Atlantic-influenced climate. In 1887, Harriague presented his Tannat to the world, earning international recognition and medals at exhibitions in Barcelona and Paris.

Today, Tannat is Uruguay’s signature grape, producing w**es known for their deep color, structure, freshness, and distinctive character. While Tannat remains at the heart of the country’s w**e identity, Uruguay has evolved into a diverse w**e region, with vineyards extending across the south, coast, north, and east. The Atlantic influence and varied soils help give Uruguayan w**es their own sense of place.

From a young immigrant w**e culture to a country recognized around the world for Tannat, Uruguay has built a w**e identity that is unmistakably its own. Uruguay has become a w**e country with a bold identity.

RC W**e Merchants we leave no stone unturned in our continued search for the Holy Grail of W**e. Our love of w**e is prominant with the time, research, of the unique w**es the world has to offer.
