Some have asked why we do the chickens. The biggest reason? Family heritage. Carl Dick had a dairy farm and Adrian Bouma had a meat market. Both life skills are very well known in the Netherlands and Dutch heritage.

Adrian Bouma’s butchering skills had quite a legacy. He was a cook in the navy during WWII, he worked in Orange City Iowa at Woudstra’s meat market. He had a meat market in Edgerton Minnesota with his father, uncle and brothers. When he came to Michigan for Ron and Bette’s wedding, he wrote a recipe on a napkin for Mark Ebels who was in the early years of starting Little Town Jerky. He also did some on farm butchering for Mark on some other visits to Michigan if memory serves correct.

He grew up in the depression and knew the hard times just as well as the good times. He would sometimes bring pig bladders home, tie off the ends, fill it with air and make a ball for the kids to play with. He often would say “ fix it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” His meat market ran on macgyverisms before all the regulations were put in place that today would probably not meet code.

Why is this information important? Uncertain days are coming in our lives; and the best part? We know we can survive them because the generations before us had hard times too. The chickens are the one animal we can grow and butcher ourselves with the P.L. 90-492 exemption to legally sell any extra we may have to help support our community.

We get to farm like Carl, eat like Adrian and relive some of the fond memories of their lives, and the biggest lesson they left us, freedom comes from your own knowledge and action, not dependency on a system.

The chickens are processed and the extras are ready to be a part of delicious meals for your family. They average in the 7-8lb range. Due to higher feed cost this year we did have to raise the price to $5/lb. if you are interested in trying some or filling your freezer, let us know! Special thanks to Cliff and Amanda for their willingness to help, it was very appreciated!

Today’s the day! We have help but there’s still room to join in the action today if you would like to learn or take some chicken home to eat. Also have lots of chicken to eat for lunch if you would like to taste some.

UPDATE: right now we are looking at a butcher date of august 14. there is still room to join if you would like! Reach out for info.

We recently got our meat bird chicks, and want to throw an opportunity out for those struggling financially in our community.

When the birds are ready to butcher, probably the middle of august, we are looking for 3-4 people to help with the butchering process. Each person will take 5 chickens home with them to feed their families.

We realize the economy is rocky and many are struggling with higher food and fuel costs. Our concern is that this economic issue could be different than most as less than 1% of our population is involved in food production, where during the Great Depression 30-40% of the population was involved in food production. The corporations will not care about you, but community works together through hardships and we want to help build community, local food production and life skills as things get tougher. As Jesus said “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:35-36, 45‬ ‭NIV‬‬

If you are interested in helping or would like to reserve some chickens as we will likely have some extras, let us know! Must have a strong stomach and a willingness to learn.

We hired a new egg collector this week! Unfortunately he gets fired on Friday because his mom and dad say he can’t stay. He’s learning lots and doing a good job.

Family visits also turn into educational experiences.

We got some new chicks this week. Picked them up from the post office and showed them to the kindergarten class at Northern Michigan Christian school. One little girl named the one she was holding “Lemon”. Unfortunately they all look so similar we can’t remember which one it is so they are all named Lemon!
