We’ve still got a few bottle lambs available. Most I pulled from ewes that had triplets or quads. A few somehow got abandoned & forgotten as the ewes moved between pastures.

Check out the pic of one of my ewes due this next week so we are likely to have several extra lambs. If you’ve wanted to get started with sheep on your backyard homestead this is a great opportunity to get it going!

Our lambing season is in full swing. Thank you Lord for this life I get to live watching beautiful sunrises and sunsets as we care for your creatures!

But not without a struggle.

Sometimes we over glamorize and romanticize this ranch life. To be fair some days the cattle grazing on lush green grass, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets actually seem to me to be a glimpse of the gloriousness of Heaven. If we can experience such beauty in a fallen & broken creation, just imagine how amazing Heaven is going to be!

But the ranch life reality is not nearly so romantic most of the time.

These pics illustrate some of the struggle of ranch life. Our efforts as managers will either end in triumph or tragedy. We do the best we can and trust God with the results.

In this group of 1st calf heifers. The first 4 to deliver have been eventful. 1st one the delivery was smooth, but while his mother ate feed at the rough, then one of my sheep guard dogs took him down. He had to have surgery to a huge gash in his flanks that his guts were hanging out. Needless to say, the canine instigator of the calf assault days were ended.

The 3rd calf birth was a difficult birth for her momma. Fortunately she delivered unassisted but the calf’s front legs were knuckling under. We duct taped homemade splints that we used to stabilize those joints so she could stand. Just to be sure she got nutrients we gave her a bottle of colostrum. Praying she is able to stand well enough today to nurse on her own.
