Community Gardens of Henry County in partnership with Georgia Farm Bureau has created a new Plant A Row Garden to help feed the needy! They have plowed up an area behind the Georgia Farm building that is about 115‘ x 45‘. It is ready to be tilled and planted. Come visit Our Wesley Way, United Methodist Church location. We have a new herb garden, a test garden for growing vegetables/flowers/fruits that will assist our gardeners in weeding, along with other gardens with strawberries, beans, blackberries, and all other types of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Today is the deadline for all interested!!

FOR GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS: Henry County Master Gardner program is offering a merit based scholarship for anyone who is planning to go to college and major in any of the following agricultural fields: Horticulture, Plant Science, Agriculture, Landscape Design, or Forestry.
The amount for this scholarship is $2,000 and is a one-time payment to help cover tuition, books, or required fees. Application DEADLINE: April 22nd, 2022.
Qualifications: (1.) be graduating senior of a Henry County, GA high school (public, private, or homeschool), (2.) be a current resident of Henry County, GA (3.) have a plan of furthering their education in an agricultural based degree

Scout Pack 266, accompanied by Den Leader, Holly Elmer, and several parents, recently visited the CGHC Wesley Way facility for a tour and to learn about winter crops. Jan Adams, a Wesley Way participating gardener and Director for the CGHC, explained how the facility provides both individual plots for home gardeners and a large Plant-A-Row area to supply fresh produce for our local food pantry. Working to obtain a “Grow Something” belt loop, the scouts learned how to identify and grow several winter crops including cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and onions.

Community Garden Report
September 2021 –December 2021

The garden at Wesley Way remained productive for this period and in addition to the individual plots cultivated by our gardeners some winter vegetables were planted in vacant plots and distributed to The Helping in His Name pantry. Gardener’s showed their cooperation in reaping and delivering the items to the pantry.
There was a lot of enthusiasm shown by the gardeners as they reaped and shared from their plots. Included in the crops planted were: Carrots, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, celery,onions,potatoes,brussel sprouts, collard greens,kale etc.
The weather had a negative impact in the latter production and reaping stages but overall, a lot of produce were reaped.
The Agricultural students and ROTC students from the Eagles Landing High school continued to support the garden and offered their timeless service again in November. They did an excellent job in removing compost from the heap and placing it in some plots that were vacant. The remaining compost was stock piled on the outside for those gardeners who needed it for future use. There was a team of students who concentrated on assisting with general garden cleaning up.
Overall, it was a very productive season and by extension a productive year.
Thanks to our gardeners and their support team who made it happen.

Greetings to our Wesley Way Community Gardeners:
We very much look forward to working with you this 2022 gardening season and are already making plans for spring planting. In fact, please mark your calendars to attend our gardener sign up and information meeting set for Thursday, February 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Heritage Senior Center, 1050 Florence McGarity Blvd., McDonough, GA. Light refreshments to be served.
As a returning gardener, please note that fees have not changed for this year: you have already paid the one-time membership fee of $25.00 so only the annual plot rental fee of $25.00 will be charged for each plot. Our non-profit will continue to provide pH soil tests, soil fertilizer, water and all other supplies and gardening tools. We also will provide some plants for you depending upon availability and costs.
Our goal this year is to provide a robust community gardening program with gardening instruction, field trips and events at the garden… all this and not to mention the joy of getting to know all of our dedicated returning gardeners.

Wesley Way Community Garden
COMMUNITY GARDENS OF HENRY COUNTY, INC.
WELCOMES NEW GARDENERS TO 2022 PROGRAMS.

Community Gardens of Henry, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2003 whose mission is to promote the well-being of the community by providing gardening opportunities and a healthy food source for Henry residents of all ages. President George Jeburk along with the Board of Directors have planned a robust community gardening program for Henry County residents which includes gardening instruction, field trips and garden events. President Jeburk remarked that “we are anxious to offer this wholesome outdoor program to our county residents especially as we continue to cope with the effects of Covid and rising inflation which increases the cost of fresh, wholesome food for our tables.”
Jeburk noted that “we also have plant-a-row gardens where we grow vegetables for donation to food banks, and other charitable organizations in Henry County. These gardens are operated by our nonprofit and its volunteer partners. We were especially pleased this year when we grew, harvested and donated more than 3,500 lbs. of produce from our plant-a-row garden at Wesley Way to help feed needy folks in our county and since our beginning in 2003 we have donated more than 115,000 lbs. of locally gown vegetables.”
The cost of becoming a member of the non-profit is a one-time $25.00 membership fee. Gardening plots are $25.00 per plot annually and are available on a “first come first serve basis”. Community Gardens provides pH soil tests, soil fertilizer, water and all other supplies and gardening tools. Some plants will also be provided depending upon availability and costs.
