We appreciate the hunters keeping the herds thinned out, but it's nice to give them a safe haven where they sense they can relax. :-)

Dan is certainly my favorite fungi (fun guy), but he's not the only one around here. This is a Chicken of the Woods mushroom that is growing bigger every day. It is not a good sign, as it may indicate decay of the heartwood of the bur oak tree...the closest one to the cabin. The good news is that it has only appeared one other time, during another wet period. It is edible and supposedly "tastes like chicken" (hence, the name). It's available for any brave soul who wants to try it!

Meet Tux, one of our resident black squirrels. Black squirrels are a variation/mutation of eastern gray squirrels and are not as rare as they once were. It's fun to finally get some decent pictures of him!

This pair of swans come back to the lake each year, but I have never seen cygnets. They were lost on Friday, wandering in Earl and Dianne Roed's hay field, but thankfully found their way back.

As I get older, I try not to worry so much about what other people think of me. That much said, I AM concerned about what people think when they drive by and see me wearing a blue Solo cup on my head! So, if you have witnessed this spectacle, I just wanted to explain that the ridiculous look successfully wards off would-be horsefly attacks. You tape the blue (they are attracted to it) cup to your cap with duct tape, then apply Tangle Trap. Yesterday I got 17 of them while mowing! I just leave the cap outside and wear it again...the sticky stuff doesn't dry out.

We couldn't find the fawn today; she hid it very well! But while we were on the porch this evening, mama wandered carefully into the (now dry) swamp east of the cabin. A few minutes later, she came out of the swamp with the fawn, still on high alert.

Our challenge each day when we go to work outside is to figure out where the doe has placed her fawn. Every day it's a different location. Today, the hiding place was some tall grass instead of next to a tree. The fawn always dutifully stays put until mama comes to retrieve her.
