After a midsummer drought and going 5 weeks without rain, our lawn was brown a few weeks ago. Now, after close to 9 inches of rain over 3 weeks or so, it looks like Ireland!

So, as it ends up, the previous video was NOT Owlbert, who has been our neighbor for at least two years:

We called the Minnesota Raptor Center to ask if we should be concerned about its behavior, and sent them the video. They said there were no concerns as long as it could fly away, which it eventually did.

But then, they informed us that he was actually OJ! No, not THAT OJ, but rather, Owlbert Junior! They said Barred Owl owlets are the same size as their parents within three months. She could tell it was a young one by its coating.

Also, we discovered last evening that there are two owlets, as we observed the family of four all hunting in the swamp...with one adult perched on an oak branch, standing watch over the other three. It was too dark to get any photos.

However, two of them were back at dusk this evening, hanging out on the driveway. No doubt, an adult was nearby, keeping a close eye out!

Owlbert is getting a little too brave; he didn't even flinch when I went out onto the deck! Also, he is a little less cool after he took out a male bluebird perched on a birdhouse last week.
