You never know if you don’t try!

We’ve been wanting to offer potted dahlias for 3 years. It wasn’t until this year that we made it happen. We also had interest from a few local garden shops and stores, so when the plants were ready, we had just enough to send out to them. It turns out that managing dahlias as a nursery is even trickier than our normal work load when we still have day jobs 🤪

While I was out working in the field on Friday, I looked over at the potted dahlias, and I saw many of them were just starting to bloom. As soon as the thought crossed my mind to put them in the stand this weekend, and while I was driving my car over to load them, and while I was setting them up by flashlight, and while I was printing out the signs I made on Canva (literally just clicking until something worked), I was berating myself for not planning this sooner-No one’s going to even see the posts-You know everyone thinks it’s so late-But that tiny little voice said MAYBE THEY WILL, you won’t know unless you try.

I’m so glad and so thankful I didn’t listen. THANK YOU for showing up. You always do❤️

It’s not too late!

Dahlias shine as the vibrant stars of the late summer and early autumn garden, reaching their peak when many other plants begin to fade.

Our smallest bed of dahlias, the Rose Patch, always gets planted first because the tubers we harvest from it are intended for Fall shipping.

The plants are showing more and more color every day and pretty soon it will be all I can do to keep up with the blooms. For this reason, capturing the first few always feels special.

Last Sunday evening I had a quiet moment to walk around and greet them, snapping a few pics along the way.

A quick snapshot of the Field Patch where hundreds (more like thousands) of dahlia buds are plump and ready to burst into bloom.

Soon we’ll be walking the rows, finding new favorites, and stocking our driveway flower stand with fresh bouquets.

Today, I saw the first Banded Woolly Bear caterpillar of the season. Or as I’ve called it my whole life, a fuzz fuzz.

Have you seen one yet? Does this seem early, or right on time?

Don’t let social media tell you that you’re behind🌱
When I started growing dahlias, I did it at my own pace, having no idea there was a timeline to follow. I was able to stay in my bubble, working in a way that fit my schedule, until I started reading the chatter online. Whew, that shook me a bit!

Even though I knew what my purpose in growing dahlias was, even though I knew I’d have an abundance of flowers—and more importantly, tubers, my brain would quickly jump into comparison mode. Never mind location + weather pattern + many other variables.

I still sometimes feel a tiny hitch in my chest when I start to see people sharing their blooms. But it’s okay, because I know we’re on track for bucketloads of them soon. I’m actually grateful for the time I have now, just caring for the plants!
