Nelson, BC a weekend worth every single step! 🇨🇦❤️
Waterfalls and canyon stops on the way up, then our long-awaited CBC Tower adventure via Pulpit Rock and Flagpole! ⛰️ More than 7 hours on the trail, brutal climbs, breathtaking views, Evan leading the pack (naturally 😂), and some LOBSTER MUSHROOMS!
Sunday brought more treasures at Grohman Narrows Park, lake views along the Rail to Trail, a little wander through Nelson, and one last stop at Peewee Falls Overlook.
Add delicious treats from Charcuterie Totoche, L&C French Bakery & La Ruelle Bakery, and the perfect cozy retreat at Bees Knees In The Trees complete with a hot tub overlooking the illuminated CBC Tower and you’ve got one unforgettable weekend! 🥐🧀♨️
Tired legs, full bellies, happy hearts, and precious family memories. These are the weekends we’ll remember. ❤️

🌽🍎 A fun morning at our fabulous neighbors, Mission Creek Farms! 🌻🥒
We absolutely love heading over to Mission Creek Farms and honestly, the boys are always asking, “When are we going again?”
It’s so much more than just picking up fresh produce. We love walking around, seeing what’s growing, learning about the crops, picking what’s in season, and getting to learn from Walt. There’s something really special about kids being able to see where their food comes from and experience a real working farm.
Right now, there is SO much goodness in the fields and orchard:
🌽 Sweet corn
🍎 Lots and lots of apples
🍈 All kinds of melons
🥒 Cucumbers
🥔 Potatoes
🫘 All sorts of beans
🫐 The last of the berries
🍅 Tomatoes
🌶️ Peppers
💚 Tomatillos
🌸 Beautiful flowers
Every visit is a little different depending on what’s ready, which is part of the fun!
If you haven’t been yet, go support this wonderful local family. You’ll leave with beautiful, fresh produce and a great farm experience for the adults and kids. 🥰
We feel very lucky to have such wonderful farming neighbors! 🌱🐓

Another beautiful day wandering the forest!
Yesterday we headed up for a little mushroom walk and checked our rainbow chanterelle spot. There were lots of tiny babies popping up, plus one decent-sized one. We’ll be back! 😉
We followed the creek and the forest kept giving us something to discover: russulas, many gem-studded puffballs (Lycoperdon perlatum), coral fungi, earthstars, woolly chanterelles (not to be confused with the edible chanterelles!), and so many other interesting mushrooms and fungi.
We also spotted Chlorociboria, the little green elf cups that can actually stain the wood around them a beautiful blue-green color; ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora); and even some wonderfully weird dog vomit slime mold (Fuligo septica). Nature definitely has a sense of humor. 😂
And then, just when we were thinking we might not find anything particularly exciting… 🍄 we found a HUGE Albatrellus!
Albatrellus can become pretty tough when they get older, but harvested at the right stage they’re tender enough and have a delicious flavor. And one of our favorite things about them? They are SO easy to clean! 🙌
🐇 We also had a beautiful snowshoe hare come surprisingly close, still wearing its summer coat. Such a special encounter!
And of course, wandering along the creek and enjoying the perfect fall weather is pretty hard to beat.
Sometimes mushroom hunting is about bringing home a basket full of treasures… and sometimes it’s about all the little things you notice along the way. Yesterday gave us a bit of both. ❤️

A little evening adventure
I went back to check on the hericium stump from last trip there, I left quite a few young shoots to keep growing. It’s always fun to see how quickly they develop! 🌿
And of course, I couldn’t walk through the woods without keeping an eye out for other treasures… a few beautiful lobster mushrooms made an appearance along the way!
The temperature was absolutely perfect tonight still warm and comfortable. One of those peaceful evenings that makes you want to stay outside just a little longer. ❤️

A fun day on Mt. Spokane!
After several sunny, warm days following last week’s rain, we decided it was time to check out one of our favorite areas of the mountain and see what the forest had been up to. 🌲☀️
It started out pretty slow… but then Franck became unstoppable! 😂 He spotted one white chanterelle, then another, and soon we were finding quite a few!
The white chanterelles were mostly already fully out of the ground, while the rainbow chanterelles were just starting to emerge so fresh and beautiful! 🌈🍄 We found quite a few of those too.
And just before heading back to the car, we spotted some Albatrellus to finish off the hunt.
A beautiful mountain day, plenty of mushrooms, and a very happy mushroom-hunting morning.
Sometimes all it takes is a little sunshine after the rain! ☀️

A quick evening walk in the woods, hoping we might get lucky and find a few lobsters…
Instead, we found something even more rewarding: a beautiful fallen log covered in Bear’s Head Tooth mushrooms, popping out from all different spots! 🤍
What a surprise to discover such a generous little forest treasure so close to home. We were able to bring home quite a bit!
Sometimes the best finds are the ones you weren’t looking for. ❤️

🍄🌲 Our first family mushroom outings of the season!

Saturday we headed up into the mountains and found a few beautiful white chanterelles just starting to pop out of the ground. We also spotted some Albatrellus mushrooms growing off the trail.
Then on Sunday, we explored the woods again and came home with a couple of gorgeous lobster mushrooms. Franck had found quite a few a few weeks ago, so it looks like the season is getting started!
Both forays were short, but our favorite little spots gave us an easy and very satisfying reward. Sometimes you don’t have to go far when you know where to look! 😉
With more rain coming down, we’re getting excited for what we hope will be a wonderful fall mushroom season.

Nothing better than getting the family out in the woods together! ❤️

🌲🔥 A quick overview through a landscape forever changed
We spent some time wandering around the Bowl and Pitcher Bridge at Riverside State Park today. The scenery along the Spokane River is still beautiful, but the devastation from the fire is hard to comprehend.
The nearby road and surrounding area have been heavily burned, with so much of the landscape completely transformed. Seeing places we have driven through so many times now covered in blackened trees and burned vegetation was honestly shocking.
The Bowl and Pitcher Bridge is still standing, but the signs of the fire are everywhere around it. And the river is extremely low, making the whole scene feel even more unusual.
Nature has an incredible ability to recover, and we hope that in time this area will begin to heal and come back to life. 🌱💚

A beautiful summer afternoon at Horseshoe Lake with Enzo. 💙
We paddled all around the lake, practicing how to synchronize our strokes since we shared the paddleboard. Along the way we admired the little waterfall from top to bottom, spotted birds, fish, and turtles enjoying the sunshine.
One of the highlights was visiting Devil’s Well, an incredible giant glacial pothole carved by swirling Ice Age waters thousands of years ago.
Of course, we couldn’t leave without jumping in for a few refreshing dips. We also had fun looking at the huge rock formations along the shoreline including one that looks just like a giant head if you catch it from the right angle. 🪨👀
The drive there isn’t my favorite, but every single time the beauty of Horseshoe Lake makes it completely worth it.

Afternoon at Mt Spokane ☀️🌲
Such a beautiful time up on the mountain today! The weather couldn’t have been better: perfect light, fresh air, and that peaceful forest feeling you only get up there.

Enzo had the best time gathering natural craft materials and exploring along the creek, getting fully into the adventure of it all. We stopped often to look at interesting fungi and plants along the trail so much life everywhere you look right now.

Evan’s highlight of the day: spotting some beautiful Boletus fibrillosus always exciting to find those in the wild!

A simple, perfect afternoon together in nature. Grateful for these moments outside, exploring, learning, and slowing down as a family. 🌿
