Hansen’s Green Bluff Orchard and Christmas Trees by Karen Hansen

IT ALL STARTED WITH A BOX OF BARTLETT PEARS…REALLY! In the fall of 1985 I came to Green Bluff and visited Rinck and Wing Farm looking for some pears. I mentioned that my husband, Rod, always dreamed of having an orchard. (Both Rod and I grew up in Spokane and had come to the bluff as kids with our families…then college, then marriage, jobs in Montana and 15 years later back to Spokane.)

Laughing, Gert Rinck said they had 10 acres for sale down the road. Sure enough, there was an old 4-sale sign in an empty field. So that evening when Rod got home from teaching at Whitworth College I mentioned that there was a beautiful piece of land for sale on the west side of Green Bluff that we needed to look at. Thanks to Kenny and Gert Rinck the rest is history!

In the spring of 1986 a well was dug, nearly 1,000 apple, cherry and peach trees were planted and a house was built. The dream was taking shape! However, we had no tractor, no implements, and no knowledge of orcharding. We did have a love of the land and a willingness to work hard and learn.

We were looking forward to a wonderful apple harvest in 1994 when a terrible hailstorm hit mid-June. The crop was severely damaged but we were able to borrow a neighbor’s cider press and make apple cider… A blessing in disguise! Cider production continues to grow as we add new varieties of apples from our ever expanding orchard.

We make and sell a dozen varieties of jams, apple butter and chunky applesauce here at the farm. Also have grapes and Christmas trees. We do like to support local artisans and sell a variety of their products in the shed…hand knit woolen socks, recycled coats and sweaters turned into warm mittens, greeting cards, woven mats, and art work.

A relevant and compelling quote I saw from a workbook called “Starting and Running your Own Small Farm Business” says this:

“For many years, farms have been growing ever larger to make them work. Now, we are enjoying a quiet revolution of those of us willing to create a niche from the small plots we live upon. The American dream of working the land you own is not a dream of days gone by! Our experience will differ from our ancestors’ experience, for we can no longer pioneer fresh earth, but we can create something from our farms and market it to eager, excited customers”.

And I would add to this the importance of protecting and preserving our region’s agricultural resource lands—Green Bluff being a prime example!

Looking to the future, son Derrick has assumed full responsibility of running the farm since Rod died at the end of 2016; but his dream lives on…as the business continues to adapt and grow, to plant and experiment in this special place! Visit us at: www.hansensgreenblufforchard.com

Meet the Grower 24 of 25: 🎃🍑🎶

If you’ve ever visited Beck’s Harvest House in the heart of Green Bluff, chances are you’ve seen Todd Beck greeting customers around the store and in the orchard with a smile on his face.
Todd’s journey with farming began back in 1983, when his family moved to Green Bluff. He grew up among the rows of apple trees, watching his parents, Gordon and Marilyn, work the orchard with care, passion, and purpose.

Todd graduated from Washington State University in 1996 with a degree in Marketing, and while he initially pursued a career in mortgage lending, the call of the land he loved was too strong to ignore. He returned to Green Bluff to work alongside his parents, eager to soak up everything he could about farming, business, and what would eventually become a thriving Agri-tainment destination.

Today, Todd leads full farm operations at Beck’s Harvest House, where he works with his wife Kim and their two children, Aiden and Emmalee. Every member of the family plays an important role—whether it’s making donut batter in the kitchen, sampling produce in the Fruit Fort, or pouring cold beverages for the guests enjoying the views on the patio. The Becks are all in, working together to make the farm a welcoming, memorable place for visitors.

Todd thrives outdoors, preferring the rhythm of the seasons and the satisfaction of seeing crops blossom and thrive over the confines of an office. His hands-on approach extends beyond the fields—he is often seen walking the grounds, chatting with visitors, answering questions, and sharing the story of the farm. Todd genuinely enjoys connecting with customers and making them feel like part of the Beck’s Harvest House family.

At Beck’s, Todd is deeply committed to offering only the highest quality and best selection of produce available. Everything sold at the Fruit Fort comes with a superior standard and full guarantee—a testament to Todd’s dedication to excellence. He works side-by-side with his family and amazing staff, instilling strong work ethic in young people and ensuring top-notch customer service that keeps generations of customers coming back.

As part of the close-knit Green Bluff farming community, Todd values the deep connections among local growers who work together, share knowledge, lift one another up, and shares in a belief of hard work and the simple joy of life on the farm.

Meet the Grower 20 of 25: 🍎🐓🎃

“DON'T BUY FOOD FROM STRANGERS!”, says Hidden Acres Orchards, "the people's farm".

A message from Nick and Caitlin:

FOODPRINT, food miles, the carbon footprint of our food. We can’t help but ponder the foodprint of the dazzling produce we see at our local grocery store. All these exotic fruits grown in places we can only dream about vacationing in, hopefully grown with the environment and human rights in mind, picked a month early so it can travel thousands of miles, and placed ever so esthetically in our local markets. We live in such a food abundant region that we can all intentionally make positive food choices that decrease our foodprint.

We LOVE to see cartload after carload of food leave our farm. When you buy your food directly from our farm you are eating fresher food which is more nutritious, you’re using less packaging, you’re keeping your money local while supporting a 4th generation family farm, and all while building a wonderful relationship with us- your food producer. It’s a win for all that are involved!

We know that most carbon emissions related to food is in the production phase. That is why we are energetically trying to lower our co2 emissions through solar, biofuels, natural fertilizers, minimal sprays, composting, symbiotic wildlife relationships, minimal tillage, and our fascinating water pumping windmill that aids in irrigation. All while hoping that the carbon we do emit is being sequestered in the long life cycles and high yields of our fruit trees and field crops.

We aren’t scientician’s, but maybe you can answer this question: can we collectively lower our foodprint through obtaining the majority of our food from hyper-local sources?
